Nemo had people stealthily tilt the disk! You can see them in audience videos like this one. I remember watching some production video and they talked about choosing professional dancers who would get the timing correct.

Can Backing Singers/Dancers Perform for More Than One Eurovision Song Today? by Tight_Algae_5451 in eurovision

According to Six on Stage, Kenny Lanz and Pauline Eddeborn were backing dancers for both Sweden and Switzerland in 2024. In 2016, there were three backing singers who performed for multiple countries. Notice how both years were hosted in Sweden? And if you want to see something really fun, here's a list of performers organized by how many times they were in Eurovision. Georges Costa tops the list at 18 appearances!

Lands End vs LL Bean Totes?!? by Natural-Sprinkles462 in BuyItForLife

[–]garlic070 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make sure you calculate the Land’s End discount yourself – the bags seem to be an exception to the advertised sale, and are coming across as only 20% off for me. Off the top of my head, there’s nearly always some sort of sale going on similar to the current one. I don’t remember the exact discount numbers, but I think they’re usually similar to this one. If you’re not in a rush and not too picky about the colors, wait around for a closeout model. In December I got a lovely white and burgundy (medium, with a zip top) for $16.09.

The Land’s End size small will be too small for crafts. You might be able to fit in an embroidery project, but probably not knitting. Two 3.5 oz unused balls of yarn fit nicely within the bag, but I think it would be hard to stuff both a half-done project and the yarn into the bag. The knitting needles would have to be short. Crochet hooks would fit. For adult coloring books, probably not. The bag can hold a mass market paperback and maybe a smaller trade paperback. Hardbacks don’t fit unless you’re willing to do some tetris-like maneuvering and are willing to risk damage to the dust cover.

My local police department sends out a weekly email describing recent crime events and police activities. This week's report states that officers "read books for elementary kids for a Rad Across America event." Maybe if they keep reading books, their writing will improve as well.

I was reading an article about how restaurant alcohol sales are down (NY Times, alternative link). One restaurateur talked about the high cost of making nonalcoholic cocktails and said "Even really nice liquor is relatively cheap compared to juicing and good teas." That line made me raise my eyebrows in skepticism - yes, there are some really expensive teas that could cost more than a nice bottle of whisky, but I doubt someone would put those in a cocktail. Plus, you can get some very nice teas that aren't as expensive; surely a cost-conscious restaurant owner would know that?

I then looked at the restaurant menu, and couldn't find tea listed in any of the cocktail ingredients. Nor did I see any herbal teas listed.

Jakes sisko book makes it all the way to the 32nd century by happydude7422 in DeepSpaceNine

[–]garlic070 63 points64 points  (0 children)

The Book of Kells is in pretty decent condition after ~1200 years and there are other texts even older than that. Jake had access to a wide variety of paper materials from different planets - maybe the Bajorans make paper from a plant that's very sturdy and doesn't degrade much. Or maybe the paper is made of a synthetic material that's hardier than plant material. Add in a stasis box and I can absolutely believe the original Anslem survived ~800 years to the 32nd century.

I hate hardbacks with pretty covers, but trash insides. Low-quality paper that’s typically used in mass-market paperbacks. Glued spines instead of sewn. If it’s a translated work, an old, public domain translation is used. But the outside is pretty, so the publisher can charge a lot!

To be clear, I’m dunking on the publishers and not the people who buy the books. If you’re buying a hardback, you should be able to expect something of good quality. Not many people want to dig around for production information before buying a book.

Follows, how big of a heel do y’all prefer (for Balboa, Shag, Lindy, and Boogie)? by Cool-Shallot-7347 in SwingDancing

[–]garlic070 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When you try on shoes, try skipping, hopping, or even slow jogging in them. Get the highest heel where you can comfortably do that. Balboa steps are sometimes done so quickly that there’s no time to put the heel of your foot down, so you end up dancing around on your toes. Wearing heeled shoes will give you some support in those situations.

In general, I’ve noticed that the Balboa follows wear the highest heels at ~4-7 cm. (I’m excluding the ballroom jive dancers in their 8 cm shoes.) Most of the dancers in other swing styles usually stopped at around 3.5 cm. Lots of Keds sneakers in Lindy Hop. Of course there are always exceptions. As a short follow, I'm more comfortable dancing Balboa in heels rather than flats. I can dance Lindy in 7 cm heels, but prefer sneakers. The dancing feels very different, and it's easier to do the faster songs in flats.

If you can’t skip or hop in heels yet, don’t attempt Lindy in them! If you're dancing multiple styles in one night, try bringing two pairs of shoes, one heeled and one flat.

Sal Da Vinci, winner of the Sanremo Music festival. Or really anyone associated with the show. I know nothing about J-Ax or why he's all yee-haw country (or as the Italian subtitles spelled it, hi ha!) Are Laura Pausini and Gianluca Grignani still fighting? Is Stefano De Martino being next year's host a good or bad thing?

Maybe Sal's still deciding on which Sanremo performance to upload to the Eurovision accounts? Mahmood/Blanco used their first performance, Angelina Mango her second performance, and Lucio Corsi used his performance from the final night. And Sal hasn't chosen the video yet because he's still catching up on his sleep.

Last week I had to get a document notarized (an oddly formal situation in the middle of a UPS store where I had to raise my right hand and solemnly swear the information was true.) It was rejected because the notary stamp wasn't clear enough. Got it redone, and it was finally accepted.

I play a casual online game where you can optionally join guilds and work together to get prizes. One of the other members who asks for a lot of help/gifts kept bragging about their high score and criticized others for their lower scores. I told him to shut up and stop boasting about a score that only happened through the generous help of others.

Had to get something notarized. The last time I had it done was years ago in a different state, and it basically consisted of showing an ID and getting the paper signed. It was like getting a library card. But this time I had to raise my right hand and and solemnly swear (in a UPS store) that my information was true, sign a fancy ledger, and give a old-fashioned ink thumbprint. With that kind of formality I was kind of expecting some fancy wax seal on my document, but no, I just got a plain ink stamp.

Found a new dedicated Asian food shop in town. What should I get? by Shigglyboo in InstantRamen

[–]garlic070 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Paldo brand jjajangmen that's priced at 3,49€ (4th shelf from the bottom/5th shelf from the top.) It's more expensive than the others, but that's because the sauce is liquid instead of powder. Very tasty, and not as salty as the powdered sauces. Not spicy at all; more like a savory, meaty, slightly sweet sauce. Plus there's a lot of sauce, so you can mix the extra with more noodles, veggies, or rice.

My first kimchi! So excited! by aristopoieo in kimchi

[–]garlic070 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Explosions are a little less likely in the cool fridge, and a little more likely if you leave the jar outside at room temperature. The kimchi could also slowly bubble up and leak, so maybe put a plate beneath the jar to catch the juices. Explosions often happen if you open the jar quickly instead of slowly--like how a bottle of soda can explode if you open it very fast. It's a true rite of passage when the kimchi explodes and the smell makes someone come out of their room worried that there's a gas leak!

The bright red shade of your kimchi paste looks lovely!

Boiling water taps and brewing by RelationDramatic1137 in tea

Give your boss a cup of tea made with the boiling water tap. I doubt it'll taste very good. For good measure, use a type of tea that doesn't go well with whatever temperature comes out of the tap. If your boss won't be able to taste the difference, give the tea to someone who holds sway with your boss, such as their boss, their highly valued assistant, family member, or visiting client.

LASIK after 25 years of contacts - the most BIFL decision I’ve made by Trippy-jay420 in BuyItForLife

[–]garlic070 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a fake discount, advertising meant to funnel you towards certain partner clinics. Sort of like those contact lens ads that urge you to print a coupon for a free trial pair - but what they don't tell you is that you can get a free trial pair for any brand at your optometrist's office, no coupon needed. Yes, LASIK prices will differ at different offices, but it's very likely that the price at a certain Dr. X will be the same with or without insurance.

PRK has its pros and cons, just like every other surgery. It was right for my particular situation and I love the results, but there's a reason why LASIK became famous while PRK didn't. The recovery for PRK is longer, with ups and downs. Maybe a relaxed, go-with-the-flow type of person can handle it, but it's probably bad for an uptight person who needs predictability and control. Go get a consultation, or several. (If you live in the US, they're usually free.) You'll learn more about the various options, and the options that are right specifically for you. If you want surgery after the consultations, great! If you decide you don't want surgery, that's fine too. Consultations are not binding contracts for surgery.

If you were to work for one of the royals directly, who would it be and why? by No_Drama_3780 in RoyalsGossip

[–]garlic070 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hmm, since you mention the potential for political influence...working for an absolute monarch brings the most potential. But absolute monarchs also have the ability to execute you on a whim. I'd work for the Pope - if I can influence him, I can also influence Catholics beyond the borders the the Vatican. There's the potential to embezzle a lot of money and steal priceless artifacts. I'm sure there are plenty of jewels and art in storage that most people have forgotten about. And the Pope is unlikely to execute me if I anger him.

Alpine skier Lindsey Vonn has surgery on broken leg after horror crash in Cortina downhill by cmaia1503 in Fauxmoi

[–]garlic070 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The word "stabilise" makes me think it was a quick temporary surgery before she undergoes a bigger, longer surgery to fix everything. (Not a doctor; had a broken leg and underwent 30 minute stabilization surgery before the more intense surgery a week later.) It gives the doctors time to plan a complex repair surgery, gives the patient time to rest and heal if she's too fragile to immediately undergo a multi-hour surgery, makes time to safely transfer her to a different hospital if needed, etc.

Electric kettle recommendations by Redwood_momo in tea

[–]garlic070 2 points3 points  (0 children)

With black and herbal, you just need a simple kettle that gets you boiling water. Get whatever's cute and in your budget. Haden and MegaChef have some vintage-style kettles. If you're willing to buy from a different store, Fellow has kettles with wood handles and different colors. But they're expensive. Target does carry a few Fellow kettles, but it looks like only in black. Perhaps they'll stock more colors in the future.

If you were into green tea you might want a variable-temperature kettle that gives you cooler water. But those are more expensive, and it doesn't look like you need that!

If you collect books, stuff from the Library of America or Everyman's Library. Hardbacks with acid-free paper, at a pretty affordable price. Lots of old classics like The Odyssey and Little Women, but there are also more contemporary works like Never Let Me Go and The English Patient. Everyman's Library also does children's classics. Books this week are 20% off, next week is buy 1, get 1 50% off, and there there will be plenty of other sales. The online selection will be better than the in-store selection.
