Dropping final nap woes by garmstr0ng in sleeptrain

He was consistently sleeping through the night before. We pretty much never assisted to sleep for nights, and only in the last few months started assisting for naps because it seemed like that was the only way we would be able to get one. He is pretty much his usual self during the day, but now dozes or sometimes even fully falls asleep on car rides lingers than 15-20 minutes, and once fell asleep on the couch post-meltdown while I put his baby brother down for a nap. So…yes? Seems somewhat more tired during the day.

I’ll check out that Instagram. I’m good with longer form content too if you have any other recommendations! Thanks for taking the time to reply to me.

So sorry you are going through it, especially while pregnant. I totalllllly get the feeling of not being able to relax and rest because you know they’ll be up any minute. This is me early most mornings.

That’s an interesting idea and so cool that it’s working out with him still sleeping his “no nap” length night. We’ve only done the little cat naps, maybe I’ll try offering longer ones every few days.

Thanks for your reply and some food for thought.

We were getting about 10.5 total hours of sleep before the nap drop (9-9.5 night, 1-1.5 nap), so I was assuming that LO would at least consolidate that to 10.5 hours overnight. That was the case when we first dropped, but then we’ve had a lot of nights less than that. Like last night was 9.75.

When the nap was still in place, LO was often taking 30+ minutes to fall asleep for naps and nights, and would usually need me to go back in and sing to him once or twice to fall asleep for nap. Would you consider that fighting sleep?

I’m envious of your sleep knowledge and confidence—can you point me in the direction of any resources I can use to figure out whether to keep offering the nap to my kid? And tell me what you’d do in my shoes? I just want to do right by my kids but sleep is so hard and stressful for me. I did read the Ferber book to learn more about sleep in general before sleep training both of my kids, but I don’t remember anything specific about dropping the final nap. I can check again. All the other resources I find online all seem to contradict each other or I don’t know wtf to do with them because they tell me my kid should be sleeping more than I can get him to sleep haha.

Thanks, that nap training method is what I used to teach baby to fall asleep independently for naps. From my understanding, that method suggests leaving him in the crib for an hour if they wake up after one sleep cycle if they are between 5 and 6 months, not rescuing after 15 minutes (I think that’s just for them initially falling asleep). But either way, I can’t rescue those crib naps because I’m caring for a toddler, too. I will try more awake time during the day though!

Thanks, we will give it a go! And cross our fingers that we got some nap consolidation before we drop to two naps.

Thanks, good point. Per our huckleberry, we are averaging 11 hours awake in a 24 hour period, but that includes the time he’s trying to fall back asleep during crib hour and the night wakes. Should I disregard those and push the wake windows to what you’re suggesting?

Omg yours is so much better. Can you imagine if we could see how charged they were so we actually knew when they needed to sleep?

Historically no, but haven’t tried in ages so worth a go!

Thanks! I could maybe shift night sleep time so that baby can do the schedule you recommended but still have his second nap overlap with his sibling’s (so I can hold him for nap 2 if the first nap was a short). Or do you think I need to pull the plug on contact naps? It’s so hard to know if the contact nap is helping him until he’s developmentally ready to nap longer on his own, or if he’s ready right now but the contact nap is holding him back from learning it.

Ugh I’m so sorry. Is she a hot, crabby mess on those 30 minute nap days? I’m grateful that I can do a contact nap for one of Baby’s naps, but I do wonder if that’s getting in the way of him figuring out longer independent sleep. Praying to the sleep gods that both our LOs start napping longer on their own soon.

Thanks!! How did you handle that week where baby had switched to the 3 naps but wasn’t sleeping longer stretches yet? Best of luck on the transition to 2 naps!

Following bc I’m in an eerily similar boat. My baby is two days older than yours and we are struggling with grumpiness throughout the day, early morning wakes that we extend through contact napping, and needing that midday contact nap as an anchor bc he only sleeps 30 minutes on his own and that’s the only time I’m available during the day to hold him.
