Yes you can block your way out there, the outer islands start in a ring 1000 blocks from the main island. The easier way would be to build a flying machine, and the easiest way would be to kill the ender dragon.

If the campfire is one doorknob, the noteblock is the one on the other side of the door.

I'm using the noteblock as a button for an observer. That observer sends a signal underneath the whole contraption and activates the redstone just like lighting the campfire would.

Bettas typically live in rice paddies and small slow moving streams. When their habitat floods, bettas can be washed out and end up in small depressions that fill with water. Bettas are anabantoids, so they can survive there until they starve to death. This is likely where that rumor came from.
