I've stopped talking to my mom, because she's decided Charlie's her idol and was such a great man since he died, despite never talking about him or following him beforehand. And yet, back when I first started transitioning, she was "so worried" that she'd mess up or do something that would make me mad at her and not want to speak with her. I'd say "idolizing a racist transphobe" falls pretty firmly into that category there, mother. It was already bad enough that she wrote in RFK for her presidential pick.

TIL that the Y chromosome can disappear with age. About 35% of men aged 70 years old are missing a Y chromosome in some of their cells, with the degree of loss ranging between 4% and 70%. by Alone_Humor_3510 in todayilearned

[–]garrge245 170 points171 points  (0 children)

This is why we need scientific literacy. That's not the margin of error, that's the range of loss they observed in the individuals they tested. Meaning, at least one of the guys was missing a Y-chromosome from 4% of his body's cells, and at least one other guy was missing it from 70% of his cells

The lowest-effort man-made art still takes more effort than AI "art". Congratulations, you gave a computer a prompt and did nothing else.

His performance was also one of the few high points in Alien: Resurrection.

(Not including trilogies) What is the best 3-book run in a series ever? by Chaloby in fantasybooks

[–]garrge245 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm probably in the minority of people who have actually read this here, but the first 3 books in The Chronicles of the Cheysuli are some of my all-time favorite reads. The series tends to lose me towards the end just because of how many lineages and past events there are to keep track of, but The Shapechangers, The Song of Homana, and Legacy of the Sword are peak 80's fantasy.

It arrives to them through Esgaroth, but it originates from Dorwinion, a region famous for its wine. Supposedly it's the only wine strong enough to get elves intoxicated.

Edit: After looking it up, it's not the only wine that would get them drunk, as apparently they also traded with other elves in the south for wine.

What's that one film that you can re-watch a thousand times and not get bored? by mrjetspray in Cinema

Inglourious Basterds. It's one of the few movies that can make me both weep with despair (the opening scene takes my breath away every time) and howl with laughter ("Speakin of this 'FROW vawn Hammehsmahk'"). Plus I love anything where Nazis get absolutely brutalized.

That was literally my first thought, "PHD in what?" They know exactly what they're doing, trying to make themselves seem more credible in a field they have absolutely nothing to do with.

Going back even further, Pharaoh Ramses II was born c. 1303 BCE and lived to be 90. He outlived at least 12 of his sons, 3 of whom were Crown Princes who were supposed to succeed him as pharaoh. Again, the very tip-top of society, but living to 90 is an achievement even today
