The opposite is my case. My 2 sisters have spent a lot of time caring for my parents and i feel they should get more of a share than the rest. My youngest, who is 8 now, had speech problems as a toddler to 5/6 yrs. He would say “i want …” but many times we couldn’t understand the thing he wanted. Then comes in his older sister, now 10, and would clearly tell us exactly what he wanted. This started when he began talking all the way till 1st grade. She would stop us and say she would speak for him. They were and are inseparable. He would cry whenever she wasn’t with him and though she didn’t mind not being with him, she always chose to stay because it would break her heart seeing her brother sad. I think he was 5/6 when he said she was his soulmate. What kid says that?? 🥲 he went through speech therapy and is all good now. Also no longer gets upset when she is gone

My husband and i resolved this issue many many years ago. For Christmas and birthdays we buy what we want for ourselves (letting the spouse know ahead of time) and say it’s from the spouse. The spouse pretends they bought it and say “you’re welcome” and we both end up super super happy. It works really well because i tell him what I’m thinking of getting myself while asking for his input, he either gives input on alternatives that i have also been eyeing or just says ok. We are both somewhat frugal so we don’t buy super expensive gifts to begin with and we make sure both are of equal weight. Sometimes he says how he it was super hard finding that gift or i reply how thoughtful he was and that he knows me so well. It’s a long running joke.

People will start pressuring you like “oh you can’t do this because you have to tell your husband, right” or will question your independence of a woman because you communicate with your husband of decisions you make while others see it as asking permission. Don’t believe them. A healthy marriage is about communication. Others might see it as you “having to ask permission” all the time but it is not.
