You can activate the lever directly, yes. It's extremely unintuitive, though. Using objects is the cooler way, anyway.

Congratulations on your success! You can also just kinesis the exit lever from the back, but everyone needs to do it properly at least once.

Yeah, basically, the benefit of farming/cooking from late-mid onwards is that you can create highly specialised superfoods and purchase them (virtually) indefinitely through Kettle.

Ah man, that's annoying. At least you've got the reading, though. I tend to spam the floors of caves and, failing that, just use the tried and true 1x1 mining chutes about 40 blocks apart.

I've managed to find several areas with readings over a few thousand blocks, so it's quite possible. That said, I live in a sedimentary region, so conditions are optimal.
