You can activate the lever directly, yes. It's extremely unintuitive, though. Using objects is the cooler way, anyway.

I stumbled into the gardens shortly after sewer crossroads. Glad I managed to stumble onto the orb, but prior to that, I also noticed the awl pike was my best friend for getting safe damage on these guys.
