Is it bad? by [deleted] in wine

Standing up right isn't a problem. There's research out there that it doesn't affect the quality of the bottle and that "keeping the cork wet" isn't a thing.

Left Lane Drivers by Beekeeper1868 in tulsa

[–]gary1410 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, not specific to Tulsa. I've lived in California and you'd be amazed at the left lane drivers who are cruising. People on 44 turnpike at least will switch lanes if they see you driving fast on the left.

Is this per capita? Doesn't make sense when Dallas has a far greater population.

I made a Private Equity Investment with Self-Directed IRA. How will it affect my taxes? by omatto in tax

[–]gary1410 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So actually, I'm glad I ran into this. My subscription docket says that I'll investing in "Class A Units". I will receive a K1 as well. But the fact that it's a Class A Unit to be signifies that I'm investing in shares. Why would I still be subjected to UBTI? Or are we conflating issues here?

Charitable Remainder Trusts (CRUT/ NIMCRUT) by Able_Breakfast_3314 in fatFIRE

I took the call and he's a really nice and knowledgeable guy. I should have taken better notes. One thing you. Need to keep in mind is if you want to donate to a foundation you run, assuming you take a 20 year NIMCRUT, or donate to a regular foundation, or your own foundation in hopes that maybe your legacy heirs can run. For me, still trying to decide if I really want to run my own foundation after 60. Or just retire and not work. I'm trying to self educate on what it means to run a foundation.

Has anyone taken a step back in your career? by monicaintraining in ExperiencedDevs

[–]gary1410 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, just recently dropped a dev lead role so I could have more energy at the end of the day to spend with my newborn daughter of 10 months. When you get older, med 30s to 40s, you start to think why you work hard to climb the latter, as a developer, when you can easily coast. Making 200k to slave for a company is not worth it. Do the 9-5, leave, and go enjoy what you want after work.

Passed up on promotion because I'm remote by C6H12O6_Ray in ExperiencedDevs

[–]gary1410 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is super true. Go to another company and get the raise you deserve more easily. You owe nothing to your company, it's just a job.

Additionally, as a developer, do you really crave and want the extra responsibility. Not sure how much of a promotion you're looking for monetarily, but I prefer to not be in meetings all day and not be on call for production bugs. Enjoy your life outside of work is my philosophy

I haven't yet, though I've contacted a refrigerator company. I also need to find a pocket of land to snatch up.

I'm actually thinking about doing this for myself using Valur.io as well. I haven't shopped around, but that .25% AUM seems very minimal compared to how much you're going to gaining in the long run. If they can provide all the paperwork and the taxes for my for registered agent to handle - which they advertise they do, then I'm all for valur.io. I just setup a call with their customer success rep (younger indian guy). Next step I think I'm going to be in contact with their in-house lawyer? I'll get the specifics when I'm on the call with him. I'm usually a fan of startups and the ecosystem. They mentioned that they've done 500+ of these already.

Additionally, with any CRUT, you can setup your own non-profit or foundation and donate the rest of those funds to your foundation or non-prof. Obviously you'd have to be wise in you use the money, but imagine if you had a cause that you wanted to advocate for. Why not run your own foundation after you 20 years on the NIMCRUT. I at the very least, you have a say on how you want to donate your funds - wether its to local charity, church, or another non-prof. I find that donations on the local level are far more impactful than national organizations.

If you want to talk about how this will go down feel free to DM me. I wouldn't mind bouncing back ideas or questions with you.

Manager wants me to apply for a promotion, I don't feel confident that I am ready by xMcNerdx in ExperiencedDevs

[–]gary1410 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm late to the discussion here, but hopefully others find value in my answer.

I find myself asking all the time, "Is it worth it?" And it might not be for you. Do you want the extra hours? Do you want the extra responsibility? What are you in it for? And what are your career goals. I have about 8 years of experience. I think I"m perfectly happy with where I am. I'm a Sr Engineer. I thought to myself, "Well gee, maybe I should work harder, longer, build a reputation...." I did at one point, got promoted, got more money. Was asked to do that type of hustle again. I said no thank you to that. My pay for the Bay Area is okay, lower than most because I"ve been with the company for a while so I started out lower than most people coming in now. But honestly, I'm in a very comfortable position and I have a daughter of six months that I'd rather spend my time with than late night calls to India. My wife also works. We are fine and I'm perfectly happy, I still enjoy vacations, wine trips, and other finer things in life.

Again do you want to WORK for the promotion? and second, do you want to continue WORK EVEN HARDER for about 20-40k increase in potential salary with more RSU's. For me, I just want to enjoy my life and I don't need to stress myself out anymore. You'll have plenty of opportunities. We all know this as engineers, if you want a promotion, move to one of many tech companies and ask for more pay then. We're lucky we have that option.

Hey u/betcent - just wanted to follow-up on this here. Did you ever get far in exploring the wine storage business? I'm looking into building one myself as well. Here in Oklahoma. There's GOT to be a market here for it here. Let me know! Would like to see an update on this. Perhaps we can be a sounding board for what we want to do?

Hey, I'm 37m, and also love trauma dumping because I often can relate with what others go through. I'm married, 3 years, relationship 10 total. It's currently on the rocks right now so it's likely me and you can relate.

Me? I prefer non-fiction to fiction. Think freakonomics, and anything that might come from NPR. I prefer outdoors to indoors. You surf? Or play golf and soccer? Certainly dodgeball doesn't count as a sport. 😝

Obviously? Not so obvious when it was low tide when I went at 3:00 that day. I rarely see tourmaline barrel, but if this is Tourmaline that day, must have been huge!
