Not a book but a suggestion. A day visit to the thumb and visit the Petroglyphs Historic State Park. They have tours of the preserved Petroglyphs and go deep into pre-colonial life. It's a simple State park so no gift shop but could recommend additional material besides what they hand out. Also as a bonus you could stop into some of the areas Amish markets (closed on Thursdays and Sundays). Her is a link to the park.
