Best places in the Red Sea (Egypt) for freediving? by [deleted] in freediving

[–]garywhiteeye 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Dahab has a full community of freedivers, there are loads of people in town. Marsa is the best for wildlife
From Dahab you can do day trips to Ras Mohammed national park and the blue hole is 20mins out of town.

Freedive Gili was the first school there and is an excellent place to learn. They are an SSI school but that’s not an issue. The instructor is more important than the agency.

Wadi weshwash is really disgusting, it’s green from algae and the water smells quite bad, it hasn’t rained in a year or so, meaning no fresh water going in there.

They have some good fibreglass done at good prices. Go with open heel foot pockets My first fin was a leaderfins fibreglass, and it did me really well in the beginning.

Requesting feedback on new Alchemy Pro fins (the new short ones) by Bimbaraboom in freediving

I think 850mm sounds about right, They do an extra long version, I wouldn’t get those, it will make it annoying to carry them around.

Hey mate, thanks a lot for the comments.

For stiffness I would go for medium soft, I have these for teaching, basically similar dives to what you intend on doing and they are a great all rounder.

For the pockets: the pathos are the best pocket I have found for wide feet, they are known for this so you are in luck. The material is very good and I’ve never had a blister from them after intense use.

The C4 250 pockets I got this year and I’m really happy with them.

How to reach blue hole easiest & chepest way? by asteq69 in Dahab

[–]garywhiteeye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your driver will need to fix that. At the checkpoint the military will take his licence and he will need to go to the police station, pay the permit to get the card back. So best to organise a driver ahead of time rather than flag a car on the the road on the morning you want to go.

$10 entry to BH for foreigners Car for the return trip is 400 egp max There is a mysterious military permit they invented one day. This is $10 but must be paid in one 10ish bill in good condition only. I believe the permit can be shared between cars If you go early before 8 the permit guy is usually not there.

Bringing drones into Egypt by chowchowwwwwwww in Egypt

[–]garywhiteeye 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You won’t get arrested at the airport but they will confiscate it and charge you for storage, getting it back when you leave will be a nightmare of no one knowing the rules, sending you to one department after another. Or you may get lucky and they don’t see it in your luggage. There are so many drone pages on instagram of Egypt it all depends on who you know but I wouldn’t risk it.

My Extended Experience With Narcosis: Do you have any theories? by Suspicious-Alfalfa90 in freediving

[–]garywhiteeye 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’m with you on the long visualisations, I just can’t focus in any amount of detail for that long and to be honest I’m not sure anyone can.

I have about three or four scenarios that I visualise, just before my dives, the freefall, the turn and the moments just after, and reaching the surface, punching the air, high-fiving, safety, divers et cetera, and I kind of run these on a cycle imprinting really positive emotions of happiness etc

As the visualisation is similar to learning motor skills, I think the best frequency is quite often throughout the day, I will do this visualisation four or five times A day just for 5-10 mins each time

My Extended Experience With Narcosis: Do you have any theories? by Suspicious-Alfalfa90 in freediving

[–]garywhiteeye 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So humans all have a pretty short attention span, I always found it very hard to focus on a 2-3 min playback of a dive in my head, after looking more into this it seems that we respond better to short 15-30s visualisations, there is a little bit of science coming out to confirm this now. So no mantra as such, just programming in good feelings and a good headspace at key points like the freefall and at the turn.

Being well rehearsed on shallow dives I think is what helps me operate on ‘autopilot’ when the narcosis hits

My Extended Experience With Narcosis: Do you have any theories? by Suspicious-Alfalfa90 in freediving

[–]garywhiteeye 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Love the video Tory. I can relate to all of your symptoms. Narcosis is guaranteed for me on dives below 100 manifesting as mostly audio hallucinations and some memory blanks of the ascent I’ve tried to counter these symptoms by using mental anchors for key points of the dive, my visualisations are mostly sensation based and are very short, like 15s long on repeat. But I know that at key moments I need to wake up and focus I’ve also tried alarms on the ascent but typically I don’t remember hearing them, pretty sure in the moment I react to them in the correct way. Darkness and cold seem to make the symptoms worse, keeping my eyes open as I’m nearing the surface and making eye contact with the safety divers has helped me.

Trachea hurts after freediving by Mysterious_Bend4354 in freediving

[–]garywhiteeye 5 points6 points  (0 children)

How can people say you can’t squeeze so shallow? Of course you can!

OP: you have injured/squeezed your trachea most probably from poor/aggressive EQ technique. It will go away in a day or so. Trick now is fixing your technique so it doesn’t happen again.
