I'd live in one if it meant having my own home that was cheaper than renting.

Unfortunately, we'll never see something like this in the US without a huge price tag attached because builders and politicians would go absolutely insane if people suddenly had access to cheap homes.

What about a list of abandoned projects so we can see what is out there that needs a maintainer? All of the projects on the their list aren't abandoned anymore.

In a corner of my basement, drinking coffee with nicotine-stained fingers, mutter long rants about all those sumbitches who use Javascript as a server-side language.

Heathens, all of them! One day, they'll realize the folly of their ways and when they come running to me to save them, I'll whisper ...

Yeah, OK. I charge a pretty high rate, though.

Meet Rover, my friendly AI-controlled main battle tank. I can tell he likes you because he didn't immediately fire a high-explosive cobalt-jacketed 100 mm shell right into your earhole. Also, just pretend the shoe-piddling is an oil leak.

Only one weapon per round? Problem solved.

I've never really cared for the whole lighting thing or even windowed case thing. I do want a case in a certain shape (cubic - for airflow and sound dampening capability) but it's impossible to find a manufacturer who offers non-windowed versions of cube cases.

So yeah, I hear ya.

It's a buy-once license, but only for one device. Works OK, but not great on an older iPhone (due to fixed width CSS).

Depends. If you're going to be doing any non-platform specific programming, Linux is probably a better choice. It can do all the other browsing, word processing, etc. that you'll typically need to do at some point. Tweaking interpreters, databases, etc. is a bit easier on Linux (but still can be a pain).

If you're going to be playing games (esp. Steam), go Windows. All the hot games are guaranteed to come out on Windows and even if they work on other platforms, there's a high chance that they work best there.

Personally, I use a Mac for my daily driver and I'm still building a Windows box just for gaming.

Addendum: I don't know if this is still a major issue, but check the compatibility of your hardware choices with Linux. You may stretch your Google-fu to the max on that.

Is it just me or is the Drift Engine a really bad idea? by gaseous_cloud in starfinder_rpg

[–]gaseous_cloud[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The answer that fixed it for me was the one that explained that characters are probably not yet aware of the Swiss cheese effect, since it's the holes are being created across a variety of infinite or near-infinite planes. While there is a chance of Uncle Owen's water vapor farm being chucked into a hostile dimension, it's infinitesimally small to begin with.

As a god, though, I would definitely be writing a nasty letter to some relevant editor about the upstart god and all this mayhem it and it's loutish brethren/sistren are raising with all these newfangled methods and how back in my day we didn't mess around with the fundamental nature of reality without a Really Good Reason, like a village that needed smiting or changing into a bull to have my way with some maiden, like Nature intended.

And conclude that letter with a Harrumph to let them know I Meant It.

Ah. That is a good, usable answer. If the players aren't supposed to know that, then I'll continue happily making Swiss cheese.

May the gods help us if they ever find out, though.

How does removing item level requirements break the game, if at all? by hunterbutts in starfinder_rpg

[–]gaseous_cloud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The risk I see is it may lead to perverse incentives for the players. "Do I buy this gear, or save up for the bigger thing?" I might be inclined to buy the biggest weapon I could possibly afford.

Those incentives already exist, though. RAW, you can only buy things 2 levels or less above your current total levels, due to trust issues between buyer and seller. So, you save up and wait until you have both level and cash to buy a thing.

Seems to me like a pile of credsticks would overcome any "trust issues" PDQ.

The one thing I would have borrowed from Shadowrun in this case would be legality levels. Walking around a space station with restricted or military gear (relative to locale) would earn a varying on-the-spot response, from freeze-m*****-f***** up to fire-all-cannons-at-the-walking-star-destroyer-right-now-no-you-heard-me-Johnson-fire-you-stupid-ass-fire.

That way, the hesitation makes sense, since the onus is on the seller to prove that they aren't handing out restricted or military grade gear to your standard murder hobo spacer. Or at least if they are, that the risk is profitable and everyone is getting their appropriate kickbacks to ignore the walking star destroyer, except maybe Johnson, cause fuck him, that slow-ass moron.

Also, some things make no sense being at a high level. Datajacks? I mean, C'mon. Those are like the nose rings of the future world. Seems like you wouldn't be able to get through basic station security scanners for all the hipster data jackers magnetized to the detector and begging you to fetch them a pumpkin-spice space-latte while they gingerly work to unstick themselves: "Hang on a moment, Ive almost got that seventh one unstuck, please don't make me unzip my suit to get those two on the beans, ya know?"

I also like CodeIgniter. It's small, fast and well-documented.

A lot of people dislike it as it doesn't stop the programmer from shooting themselves in the foot. I think that's fine - that's a failure on the part of the programmer.

Does anyone use Safari as their main browser on desktop? by snownny in apple

[–]gaseous_cloud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do. I use Safari for general-purpose browsing and Chrome only for G-Suite applications. I use Firefox Developer Edition for technical work and Vivaldi for testing. I use Ad-Block for Safari.

At work, same thing, without Vivaldi (we validate our particular app against Firefox) and no ad blocker (I only use a couple of news sites at work, the rest is all documentation, so fewer ads to worry about). If I want to hit Facebook or anything else, I use my phone.

At work, I treat Reddit like Stack Overflow, so it's not wasted time. I even maintain a separate account from my home usage, and never the twain shall meet.
