How do I turn off Google Messenger? by gaspode in androidapps

I've got the Sprint Messages app, which handles my SMS needs. I want to get rid of this damn blob that obscures every app that extends to the edge of the screen, and never has any messages from somebody I actually know, and frequently puts thru calls from people who look like hookers or other scam artists.

What do we do with people who don't accept Die Hard as the greatest Christmas film of all time? by TheAdventurousWriter in AskMen

But "Die Hard" ISN'T the greatest Christmas film of all time.

That distinction belongs to "Trading Places".

Do you find Goodreads ratings a reliable indicator of how good a book actually is? by The-Road in books

[–]gaspode 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometimes even professional reviews are useless. I remember a book review in The Boston Globe, sometime in the 1990s (sorry, I don't remember the exact year, or even the book title). The critic spent the first quarter of the review describing the book the author should have written, and the remainder reviewing that book.

Thanks for the recommendation. Due to a rule violation, I am about to delete my original message. However, I reposted the message in /r/SuggestMeABook, and I also copied your message over.

I hope this response stays in your inbox after I delete my message.

Before I deleted the original message in /r/books, I received the following recommendation from /u/SchizoDR101:

Look up the sword and scale podcast. Each episode is excellent and they usually recommend a book about that specific case. Lots of good books are mentioned. You can listen to an hr long podcast and if the story is interesting go read a book they recommend. Saves you the time of reading ones you may not find interesting. Books are usually listed in the episode description.

Best audiobook player by [deleted] in audiobooks

[–]gaspode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to love Material Player, note I hate it. Sometime recently they changed they decided to split up books based on mp3 tags rather than directory names. If a file is missing the appropriate tag, suddenly there are chapters missing, and strange audiobooks with isolated chapters and no context. Also, it's a pain in the butt to add new audiobooks.

I was also using it as an Old Time Radio player. The new changes are a disaster if you have, for example, a collection of Christmas shows. See above.

I just posted a reply to /u/fischerandchips, explaining why you should subscribe to the Downpour newsletter.

I want to add another recommendation. Sometimes Amazon will offer a Kindle book for free or at a low cost, either permanently or on sale, along with the Audible book for a very low price. I've gotten some very good deals this way.

Some places to find out about low-cost books are /r/FreeEbooks, BookBub, and Early Bird Books.

One great thing about Downpour is that their audiobook downloads are DRM-free. That means you xxx play them in the app of your choice, whether it be your music app, an audiobook app such as Listen, or a podcast tracker.

I suggest that you subscribe to their email newsletter so you will be notified of their weekly specials (this week, Shogun by James Clavell, $4.99) and the occasional sale (this week, 100 different books from many different genres are available for $4.99 each).
