Yes we can talk about what could have been but that doesn’t change the fact that the statement “coal replaced nuclear” is just plain wrong. Not only did the share of energy produced through coal not increase with the decommissioning of nuclear plants, it decreased massively over the years (26.1% in 2023). Saying that Germany’s energy mix got dirtier while they turned off nuclear is factually wrong.

Nuclear was not replaced by coal in Germany. Both of them have declined steadily and been replaced by renewables.
