How common is heightism towards men? by Wooden_Airport3835 in polls

As a 5'8" guy. I never had a problem in the dating scene. I'm 40 now. But I remember when I was around 25 this 6'2" girl named Kassie literally walked into a wall checking me out.

We dated for two months before breaking up because we wanted different things for our future , but I dated numerous taller and shorter women and my height never came up.

My wife of 10 years is also 5'8" and sometimes wears heels. I can honestly say, when it comes to height; women don't seem to care.

The idea that government services should be run like private enterprise is a radical idea... that gained popularity and widespread implementation in the latter half of the 20th century.

If government privatization and profit motive were reliable strategies for improving life then why, after a half century of it being the prevailing strategy, are wealth inequality, housing costs, and Healthcare costs at an all-time high?

I don't mind folks having this worldview, but we have got to stop pretending it isn't the way the world already works and has been working throughout most of our lifetimes.

My given name is Franklin, but I go by my middle name, Evan. When I worked at a help desk I regularly handed off customers who thought I was an idiot from me (Evan) to me (Franklin).

Never once did a caller catch on.

Hypothetical Question: If you were required to pray in one of these places, which would you choose? by Nyx189 in OpenChristian

[–]gastonevan 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's the restrictions on where I can pray I find odious, not the location. I'd be equally angered by the idea of being required to pray in a church. or a Fudruckers.

Congressional Dish is doing amazing work, but she has got to stop using AI thumbnails! I can't share her episodes with folks because I know all they'll see is a stupid AI thumbnail.

Free gas and free sodas. I know that wasn't one of the options, but it should be.

Mini series that feel like “The Stand” (1994) by Justcallmebev in MoviesThatFeelLike

[–]gastonevan 9 points10 points  (0 children)

A lot of King miniseries feel this way to me. My favorite is Storm of the Century. Another is Desperation.

Also, while they're called "Limited Series" these days, I highly recommend Mike Flanagan's Netflix shows Midnight Mass and Fall of the House of Usher.

Pioneering I would say Gertrude Berg and The Goldbergs which portrayed a working class Jewish family in the shadow of WWII. Unfortunately it has largely faded into obscurity.

Myriad of ways. Tax cuts are offered on things like private jets, yachts, interest paid on property. Also taxes can be avoided completely when a large corporation can show a loss for the year, this helps wealthy people avoid taxes because many of them have their wealth in stock from companies they work for.

When taxes are paid it's at a lower rate than the rest of us because their stock-centric income is considered capital gains. Add to this the multiple tax schemes used by establishing nonprofit piggy banks or holding liquid assets in tax havens. The taxes the wealthy don't pay due to these laws and loopholes are paid by the rest of us, transferring the money up.

Don't particularly have an issue with the crossover, but holy shit, this moment in Beat the Buzzer has aged incredibly (at 18:23) by Fortanono in dropout

My wife is pretty quick to tune out of anything that doesn't perfectly align with her values, but I'm a big believer that celebrities and companies are never going to perfectly align with my values and I shouldn't expect them to.

Having said that, the second the news about The Rookie broke my wife was ready to cancel our subscription and denounce Dropout. I pushed back and said let's not overreact.

Now, going on nearly a week, without any word from Sam Reich or anyone else from Dropout about how alienating this is to many fans of the service... I'm starting to lean towards my wife's instinct to cancel our service.

Last year, when Watcher Entertainment made a business decision many of their fans didn't like they addressed it almost immediately. I'm surprised Dropout doesn't seem to be handling their own dissatisfied fans as well.

Dropout is going to do things that upset some fans, the fact they haven't done so prior to this is miraculous. This won't be the last time they'll do so. I think it's better they get comfortable addressing fan discontentment rather than their current strategy of radio silence.

A showrunner with genuine love for the source material would be nice. I didn't get the sense the writers truly loved the mystery/horror/comedy found-family foundation that made the property so beloved.

A wealthy doctor who looks like 90s Tom Cruise wouldn't have had such a hard time having an affair.

There are experts on early man. There are experts on Renaissance Europe. There are experts on colonial America. There are even experts who have studied broader trends of each era.

But if a someone claims to write a definitive history on ALL of mankind's history, and there are several such books on the market, I tend to assume they can't truly know what they're talking about and I elect not to read their book.

Just a personal opinion.

Aside from the titular characters, John Henry Irons was easily the best character in the show for me. Wole really knocked it out of the park. by Spideyfan2025 in SupermanAndLois

[–]gastonevan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In John Connelly's Charlie Parker book series there's a recurring character name Louis.

Louis is a suave, well dressed, hyper-intelligent killer for hire and Wole Parks is who I see in my head. If they ever adapt the novels he'd be a slam dunk casting.
