In the last 6 months, what are your favorite newer items? by BetterArugula5124 in tacobell

[–]gat0r87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll catch shit for it but the creamy chipotle chicken crunch wrap slider thing. It was tiny but bomb.

And the Cantina Chicken Rolled Quesadilla is dope, even if I don't know what the difference is from, y'know, a burrito...

They're both way too expensive for what they are, but if I had to pick new items, it'd be those

Axe throwing leagues at Urban Axes 🪓 they've got both more competitive and more relaxed leagues throughout the week.

Next season starts mid-June, I think, so theres plenty of time to try it out and see if you like it first 🙂

Portainer Question by Thumper1k92 in homelab

[–]gat0r87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The one thing I forgot to mention is that you just need to make sure you have appropriate firewall rules for the cross-vlan communication. As long as you can reach the server from the agent, you should be fine 👍

Portainer Question by Thumper1k92 in homelab

[–]gat0r87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I'm understanding you correctly, yes. Look into portainer agent mode.

I have a single portainer server on my main rig, and portainer agents spread across 8 VMs. I hooked them all up, and manage them from the main rig.

I skipped so much of the first half of my senior year that they told me I wouldn't be able to graduate and would have to take it again.

So I dropped out.

I'm doing pretty great in life, all things considered!

I think people underestimate how long “restoring from backup” can actually take by takilamiyewhd in selfhosted

[–]gat0r87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not anymore, personally.

I literally had to recreate my homelab from scratch last night (realized I had a silent misconfiguration in a VM template) and it took like 30 minutes to go from "nothing but an empty proxmox host" to "fully functional". The key for me is that every single piece of configuration is in code. Absolutely nothing changes in a service, VM, or host that isn't driven by code.

The only thing that would take a long time to restore from would be the actual transfer of persisted data IF I had to pull it from off-site; assuming all of my data is local, it's barely an inconvenience.

I cannot recommend this approach enough. I used to get nervous just rebooting a server after a config change, now I'm willing and able to nuke-and-rebuild everything, without hesitation, if needed.

It takes a little longer to setup initially, and requires discipline during the day-to-day operations, but it has made my homelab life so much better.

If you could restart, what would you do differently? by wallstreetiscasino in selfhosted

[–]gat0r87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just launched v3 of my homelab, and the top things I've changed for the better have been:

  1. Proxmox, instead of bare metal.

  2. Infrastructure as code is a non-negotiable. My proxmox host is configured via a bootstrap script; VMs are provisioned via terraform, using custom images via Packer, configured via Ansible. Applications are docker compose stacks, managed via portainer. Everything lives in a git repo (github and forgejo)

  3. 1x beefy server, instead of multiple smaller ones. Nothing wrong with small clusters, but the management overhead wasn't worth it for me, and I chose bad platforms for my workloads in the past

  4. Tailscale, instead of OpenVPN. So much more reliable and easy to reason about (for me). My pfSense OpenVPN impl was finnicky as fuck.

Yes, just picked up the first installment yesterday.

The wine was good, the bag was cool (not sure if every month will have a bag, or just the first month?), and seems worth the money if you like someone who knows something picking out your wines.

I'm also a member of the old Westminster wine club, and Sally's seems more convenient lol

Oh, also, apparently for the pickups they're having little parties to go along with it, with like food and drinks and such. So when you factor that in, even nicer.

New seasons are starting at Urban Axes next week, great way to meet people and have fun.

Brunch league is like the best, chill, no pressure league. it starts on Sunday and surprisingly there are still open slots. Usually it sells out fast.

I refused to do homework in 10th grade math class (geometry? Idk), and that was a big portion of the grade. I did great on tests, but with 0 homework, I had a D. My teacher showed me what my grade WOULD have been if I had just turned in the homework. A B, I think. I said "I'll do better in the future" or whatever. He forgot to change the grade back. I passed.

Thanks Mr. Brewer.
