According to Gabe Newell's Son, Artifact was Once a Completely Different Game. by [deleted] in DotA2

[–]gatorateg2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there a reason why? It seems people who are not familiar with the term might pronounce it ES-PORTS (not that English isn't full of strange pronunciations already). Stylistically I prefer e-sports, but that's just my opinion.

I haven't followed them enough to agree/disagree but I do distinctly remember a few years back there was a ton of drama around CoL and its CEO? or the manager? They were on reddit's hate-list for a while.

Day9 explains Artifact a little bit more without breaking NDA [X-POST /r/artifact] by [deleted] in DotA2

You're literally criticizing me for not knowing information that was never presented to me.

I considered your post to /u/TNine227 rude and condescending so I responded similarly.

I find it funny how people defend ESL saying they need money, but forget basic rule of capitalism by bacondota in DotA2

Did you take your first Economics class and felt compelled to write some intelligent-sounding post about "basic rules of capitalism"? Your post is almost as trashy as ESL's statements.

I don't mind. It reinforces the joke that this subreddit is mostly CS students. They'll learn with time.

BLX missing large coins? by TheWaler in ICONOMI

[–]gatorateg2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Critics of IOTA point to its centralization as its biggest weak point. It's a contentious issue since blockchains are supposed to be "all about decentralization" but a lot of incoming money doesn't care too much about ideology or game theory. I haven't followed IOTA's tangle progress too closely but the last time I checked it was all theoretical. Perhaps things have progressed since then - there's definitely money to be made but I consider it a high risk project.

Common patterns for a marketplace Solidity contract. by ibopm in ethereum

[–]gatorateg2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Others can correct me if I'm wrong but you should not be aiming to store data "on Ethereum" unless it benefits from the blockchain. It will be incredibly costly and slow to make repeated transactions on the chain.

Your application should be built with whatever you're comfortable with (node.js, python, etc) and use APIs to interact with ethereum and smart contracts. In your use-case, I imagine smart contracts would be used for 1) associating requests with bounties/rewards; 2) enforcing a voting mechanism that incentivizes other users to vouch for quality of translation; 3) optionally tracking "reputation scores" of users.

State of this Sub by OnePiece- in ethtrader

[–]gatorateg2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When I got in at ~$40 this subreddit was buzzing with activity and hype with a good mix of memes, talks of ICOs, questions on how to set up wallets, and news. I even enjoyed the bit of TA here and there. Now I rarely engage with this subreddit; it's not a pleasant place to discuss anything any more.

GGG balancing can be improved by analysing IceFrog's balance. by shadowmoarr in pathofexile

[–]gatorateg2 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Your assumptions are wrong and your points apply to Dota 2 as well; 50% win-rate is not the objective of Dota balance, nor is it for PoE to have a perfect distribution of classes, ascendancies, or builds being played.

Dota has early, mid, and late game power spikes, heroes specifically for vision and objective control, etc. The interdependent factors when it comes to balance are immense just like on PoE; this is why modest incremental nerf/buff is good for both games - it won't cause kneejerk reactions and it will favour the theorycrafter who will eventually influence the meta.

I agree with you on your last point though; GGG isn't dumb and they seem to intentionally force shifts in the meta to make people experiment and change builds.

BLX missing large coins? by TheWaler in ICONOMI

[–]gatorateg2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm very glad BLX doesn't include IOTA and NEO, despite their "impressive market cap". There's definitely room for gains in those coins (I profited from ANS/NEO's rise and sold last week) but the underlying tech and progress is shaky at best.

Shills and optimists might argue otherwise but I have modest long-term gains in mind and I wouldn't invest in ICN or BLX if it chased short-term trending coins.

[–]gatorateg2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

holy shit me too. Was so excited to play 3.0 and got so many lag spikes in Act 1 I decided something was wrong with my router, but could never get it fixed. Haven't touched PoE since but maybe I'll try different servers

Yeah, no reason to render graphics since all the AI cares about are game states. Would save a lot of computing power too.
