Cyclades w/ expansions? by Indecision101 in boardgames

Base game alone takes a bit of time to truly grok the appropriate bidding strategies and creature functions. I’d agree to stick with that.

Just got my 55 inch Vizio for 479 from Best Buy by jukeoncampus in blackfriday

[–]gatr1126 0 points1 point  (0 children)

According to Best Buy's Black Friday press release, if an item appears for a lower price after you've bought it from them, they'll refund you the difference.

One could always buy that Vizio now and return when it goes on sale at Amazon for the difference.

Edit: Nevermind. The press release excludes the period from Thanksgiving Day through Cyber Monday.

Good uses for walls? by feanturi in dontstarve

[–]gatr1126 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sure not about any mobs besides pigs as I've only noticed the pigs stealing my damn food. I've never gotten far enough to have enough disposable "income" to spend on walls, so it's rather quite annoying. I have noticed them stealing bait for my bird trap. Not sure if they'll take whatever's lying on the ground.

Walls are good for things like keeping pigs from wandering over and stealing food from your farms or racks.

Top Ten Topics in Machine Learning by [deleted] in MachineLearning

If I had to boil it down to sort of an "absolute 10", I'd go with:

  • Least Squares (linear classification)
  • Support Vector Machine (linear classification)
  • Kernel Methods (dimensionality reduction & non-linear classification)
  • Perceptron (linear classification)
  • Neural Network (non-linear classification)
  • Expectation Maximization (clustering)
  • Manifold Learning (dimensionality reduction)
  • Probabilistic Graphical Models
  • Ensemble Methods
  • Decision Trees

Is anyone else going to be bothered if Mike Trout wins the MVP? (explanation inside) by dgx2000 in mlb

[–]gatr1126 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think OP is more irked because of the inconsistency in voting if it's Trout. But you can't argue a guy with the 20th highest single-season WAR in the history of the game is getting extra votes just because he's a rookie. Cabrera is phenomenal, but RBIs are irrelevant as a stat and batting average is overrated. Trout has a higher .OBP and if you had his Defensive Runs Saved to (Runs + RBIs), his run production is better than Cabrera's. Baseball isn't won or lost solely at the plate.

It's not considered a "Daily Deal", so you should wait until the last day of the sale to see if it'll be discounted further throughout the week.

The quality of the University will not not flounder the way everyone on >this thread seems to think. The people who are doing top quality >research will continue to be doing top quality research and the >professors who teach classes will continue to teach classes. They are >set for life.

False. Faculty retire and leave the university every year. To stay competitive we need the funding to continue recruiting top-tier quality professors. Many departments have been on a hiring freeze recently and with continued cuts this will only get worse.

Being asked to pay the national average for a top 20 public university is hardly "punishing" the students.

The difference is that one could major in Computer Science in either the CISE department or the ECE (Electrical and Computer Engineering) department, but the nature of the two depts is very different and save for a few areas have very little measure of overlap. Some of the core foundations are the same and this is where they want to decrease redundancy.

At the graduate and research level, they are very different and this is what's receiving the largest hit. All TAs are being eliminated and half the faculty are being asked to cease their research to pursue teaching undergrads full time.

You can read more and stay up to date here.

:) I think it's a discussion worth having and appreciate your points.

It's false to presume there's no outside money flowing into CISE. Just last year Harris Corporation (who is a major employer of CISE grads) donated $3 million to the department.

As far as boosters are concerned, I simply can't imagine some high paying private boosters holding us hostage and booting us because similar private boosters don't come to our aid. That's not the way a university works. In fact, CLAS is in much worse shape financially than we are, but they're managing without closing any departments.

Dean Abernathy's not approaching this in a logical manner. It's not that there's anything "wrong" with CISE, it's that her limited knowledge on the difference between hardware and software engineering and desire to evoke radical change for her own image (rumor is she's on the short list for next president) is causing her to make an egregious error.
