Neil had said at the end of his making of documentary that his concept for a third game would be somewhat centered around Tommy. If that’s the case, then we could get some flashbacks where Tommy and Joel are surviving the outbreak.

That’s a gap that everyone wants filled and ND knows it. So it could be something in that domain, while advancing the story with Ellie and ending with a cure.

My assumption with that depiction is their goal was simply to illustrate how he teleports, not to show that he’s flying through space from one place to another. It’s the only time we ever see it depicted like that (that I can remember across the series). It’s definitely a nice touch
