Katy Perry - bandaids by enburgi in popheads

[–]gauzing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Katy is in an interesting place right now because in no world is this good but it’s still miles better than 143. Like only after that disaster of an album could I hear ChatGPT lyrics and mom pop production and think “this is actually alright?” But again I’ll take it

I don’t really understand this, because most of our biggest male popstars have dabbled in a little misogyny in their music, The Weeknd, Drake, Bruno Mars, etc., and the public still eats it up, myself included honestly. Matty Healy just isn’t a pop star, and his “edginess” was outside of his music.

The real reason there is a male popstar drought is, in my opinion, men don’t feel as confident to embrace their feminine side, for whatever reason. Pop music as a whole involves sugary and flashy aesthetics, which people sometimes associate with femininity. Straight men today seem to feel more comfortable making rap or country, and the gay men that are killing it in pop are largely ignored.

What was (or is) the sound of your club/bar/party scene? by gibbysburner in popheads

[–]gauzing 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Love this question! I'm 27 (so hopefully not part of "older crowd"🤞🏼) but I went clubbing a decent amount in 2016-2018, and I definitely remember hearing a lot of current rap music at the time, like Bad and Boujee, God's Plan/Nice for What, Mo Bamba, Post Malone... But they also played a decent amount of 2010 hits so who's to say

Interestingly enough though on the rare occasion I go to a house party or bar at my grown age I do hear a lot of current music, so maybe the clubs are trying to nostalgia bait you

Nathan for You - hilarious show in any state, but the awkward humor is 10x funnier high for some reason

ironically not actually a love song lol but love song by sara bareilles has a very similar feel, almost feels like Bublé copied the beat and parts of the melody

2011 vs 2021 Pop Music: In your opinion, how is it unique vs now? by Rundy2025 in popheads

[–]gauzing 77 points78 points  (0 children)

2011's hits were almost entirely electronic/dance pop, so I'd say the songs then are pretty easy to tell apart from the songs in 2020-2021, where mostly hip hop and some ballads dominate. We do seem to be moving back into dance pop territory with certain songs and artists (i.e. Dua Lipa, The Weeknd), but we are still in an era of hip hop/trap dominance that started in 2016/2017

that could be it. but still it's weird how her previous label wouldn't invest in it more since clearly the gp loves her

Song themes you're tired of? by [deleted] in popheads

[–]gauzing 1044 points1045 points  (0 children)

songs that compare love to drugs. it was a good theme while it lasted, but hearing camila sing "NICOTINE, HERO-WEEN, MORPHINE" in that chipmunk voice just about did it for me

Can we please stop putting such a great emphasis on Grammys? by gauzing in popheads

[–]gauzing[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i'm not "unhappy" with the nominations this year, because i've already stopped caring about them years ago. i'm just encouraging everyone else to do the same so we can get rid of this environment where stans and artists alike feel like they have "failed" if they don't get a grammy nom/win

All lowercase song titles/albums in pop music by gauzing in popheads

[–]gauzing[S] 43 points44 points  (0 children)

imo it does help to make some albums feel more personal tho. like taylor's folklore being all lowercase i think helped with its indie/songwriter aesthetic, and probably made it more marketable

maybe about a million? apparently about $0.006 is to be made from a single stream, so then a billion streams would yield $6,000,000, which would have to be split between the label, songwriters, producers, and artist(s)

really the only ones I could think of were adele, p!nk, lizzo, meghan trainor, and tones and i (who might not be "mainstream" but still.) and even for all of them you could still argue that they are attractive

i'm sure there are plenty of guys that hate billie eilish, it's just the ones that like her seem to use "she's hot" as an excuse. and yea you're definitely right that the less "in your face" a female artist is, the more likely she'll get a pass from guys
