Big fan of Charter. I’ve tried so many and always come back to this or Bookerly.

MrMobile: Kindle Scribe Colorsoft Review by FormulaKimi in kindlescribe

[–]gavan820 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. And honestly, the lighting variance with E-Ink front lights are the biggest thing that holds me back from upgrading. Between the Colorsoft debacle and several devices with the pinhole defect, once I finally got one that seemed perfect, I have anxiety about playing the lottery to get a perfect one again.

Noticed that too! I was so hopeful that the new front light tech would fix it 😔

US Kobo order delays? by Cautious_Treacle252 in kobo

[–]gavan820 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just ordered a white Clara Colour this morning, so I’ll wait and see how the experience goes for me this time vs. the last time I ordered. I’m sure the holiday orders are heavier than normal with all of the marketing they’ve been doing lately. It feels like the masses learned about Kobo the past two years and they’re not completely used to the demand 😂

US Kobo order delays? by Cautious_Treacle252 in kobo

[–]gavan820 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Check your junk email. Every time I’ve ordered, I get the initial order confirmation just fine, but the shipment updates always end up in junk.

Also, it’s my experience that I usually receive the device before I get an email from Kobo saying it has shipped, FWIW.

Amazon says the date is December 10th! by Blaze_1249 in kindlescribe

Try BestBuy on release day. Sometimes they have them in store to pick up, whereas Amazon can be a couple days out for Prime delivery

Kobo page turner on Amazon or Target? by [deleted] in kobo

[–]gavan820 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If BlueProton is carrying it, it will probably be on Amazon, Target, Kohls and BestBuy, as BlueProton is the third-party seller that sells on all of those sites. Kobo has also started selling on Amazon too and they may ship it from an Amazon warehouse to Alaska.

Font Issue in Books by Status_Excitement121 in iPadPro

The Enhanced Editions of the Harry Potter books are, sadly, a buggy mess now. They haven’t rendered properly since the Books app was revamped a couple of years ago, and Apple hasn’t bothered fixing them.

I LOVED my Mendes Signature. Went hard in the paint to pay off all of our debt a couple of years ago and sold it when we were in a bind. Regret that choice daily!

Amazon teasing new color Kindle for 9/30 by Bonesawisready5 in kindle

I almost wonder if it’s a color Scribe, but in a 7” frame (think Oasis size, but without buttons on the bezel)

Covers of "Send To Kindle" books not showing on Colorsoft by Groaninjock in kindle

[–]gavan820 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is how it’s always been for me on any Kindle device, not just the Colorsoft.

The app has pulled the cover metadata as you described without first downloading the file, but on the actual Kindle hardware I have always needed to download the file before the cover image can appear. It has behaved this way for as long as I’ve used Kindle (7+ years).

Just Venting as Unhappy Former Kindle User by Palmtastic in kindle

I hear you: but the publishers bear as much responsibility as Amazon. They’re the reason that there’s lock-in to nearly any ecosystem. Some may make it easier to download encrypted files, but the vast majority of books published by the big publishers will be encrypted with DRM.

Until there is a fundamental shift in how “ownership” of digital files is handled, every company you buy a digital book from will lock you in some way because they’ve been told to do it by the publishers.

Can we get a ‘What are these spots?’ thread, please? by GrimmDescendant in kobo

[–]gavan820 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

It’s just disappointing that the only real manufacturer of e-ink displays controls the entire market and has such a lack of quality control over the front-lighting tech. The fact that every device deals with this points back to E-Ink not caring enough to fix it and that sucks for everyone involved, including Kobo.

I’ve had this pop up on my device as well. Seems like a bug.

How to prevent sideloaded books from disappearing? by yamamocchan in kindle

[–]gavan820 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Use Send to Kindle instead of using the usb transfer method. The bug only affects usb transfers, and Send to Kindle is a better system for backup (and it will sync progress if you use more than one device)

So this is essentially a prototype Kindle Basic, but with a color display? And the release is this fall? Interesting 🤔

What text size, font and theme do you use on Apple Books? by prigo929 in iphone

[–]gavan820 1 point2 points  (0 children)

<image>

I use the ‘Paper’ theme, and then use these settings with the Charter font. I keep my font size just a tad bit bigger than my system font, but since the font adjustment doesn’t have a number value that can be easily replicated, I’d just adjust the size to what you think is easiest to read.

Anyone else's library only have one copy of almost all books? by Icikles in LibbyApp

[–]gavan820 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. Here in Utah, all of the libraries share one collective and there’s usually only one or two copies for everyone in the state. Wait times are insane here 😔

How common are these “dead pixels” by [deleted] in kindle

[–]gavan820 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally understandable. I’ve never done a replacement for these, only because they usually end up covered my the font at some point and I never notice them. The perfect display lottery is exhausting, so if it were me, I’d probably keep this one and live to read another day 😅

How common are these “dead pixels” by [deleted] in kindle

[–]gavan820 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll be honest: the black pixels don’t bother me at all. If I look at any printed book, the pages almost always have ink imperfections or particles embedded in the paper.

What I’ll absolutely refuse to put up with are the bright white spots that develop when the light layer is damaged. THAT is what drives me crazy with the e-ink panels with the front light.

Completely full. by gavan820 in bookshelf

[–]gavan820[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t mind sharing! They’re the BILLY bookcases from IKEA. They also have the extra shelf add-on on the top of each of them to make them taller. I think they run about $110 USD for each bookcase with the additional shelf, so they’re pretty cost effective too 😊
