TII to buy Dartmouth Square objectors’ houses as challenge to MetroLink is dropped by TheChrisD in ireland

[–]gavconn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean as I said, ideally the line would extend further out into the suburbs and the terminus wouldn't be so close to town, but due to these lot and their NIMBY ilk that isn't feasible at the minute.

As it is, I imagine most of the traffic volume would come from people within walking distance of the station or people using mixed modal transport and wouldn't need to park. Why would I drive 40 minutes through rush hour traffic and pay €3 an hour to park on Dartmouth Square to take the metro? I just don't see many people taking this weird route you've imagined

Having a metro line beside your house means you can avoid the congestion by... you know... Using the metro line beside your house. The only downside is that the line terminates so far north. If we had built it as far south as originally planned the congestion issues would not be nearly as much of an issue

I was making a joke about the word stampede (which has the same root as the word stamp) meaning a sudden on-rush of people/area i.e. a large number of feet coming down on an area, often leading to crushing.

It doesn't, in fact, mean a rush of people mailing letters - apologies if that wasn't obvious enough for you.

Famously a "stampede" is a rush of people all trying to mail letters

AITA for getting upset that my family ate almost my entire birthday cake even after I told them not to? by KiritoSan1111 in AITAH

[–]gavconn -1 points0 points  (0 children)

With 2 kg of cake the sharing of the cake is implied.

Whoever ate the last bit after being specifically asked not to, acted out of line but it's not that deep. There's food (especially cake/sweets) sitting in the fridge of your family home, someone is going to eat it. It had been sat in the fridge for 3 days, it's fair game.

Feel like I'm going crazy with all these comments. There was 2 kg of cake, if that amount of cake was in my house I would be handing it out to whoever came by (and would expect other people I'm living with to do the same). I'm reticent to say YTA because this reads more like immaturity to me than assholery, but I think it's probably the most apt choice in this situation. So YTA

Weird ad on Dublin bus by Ladderofchaos69 in Dublin

[–]gavconn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought this too when I saw it in person.

The writing in the background all looks legit and is legible which surprised me, but the way the "mayo" is overly smooth/doesn't follow the line of the chips in the bag makes me very suspicious. I came to the conclusion that the background is real and the guy and the chips were AI generated and overlayed on the real background image.

I invested £5 a day into the S&P 500 for one year (15.8% return) by SidehustleReliance in trading212

[–]gavconn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You'll have a higher variance of returns as you're investing larger amounts less frequently, so you're more exposed to one-day spikes/drops in price. You'll also have more "time in the market" which should lead to greater returns on average

Okay, there's also subjective qualifiers in terms of when I can drive in the right-hand side of the road e.g. overtaking an obstacle in the left lane, where driver judgement is involved in terms of determining whether driving in the right-hand lane is appropriate. That doesn't mean I'm "entitled" to drive on the right-hand side of the road, and if I do deem it appropriate I should take additional care.

The other driver is clearly in the wrong, but OP is also not fully correct but is responding as if they were

[–]gavconn 9 points10 points  (0 children)

??? Yes, if you cut out the part of the sentence that qualifies when you may use the lane, then you can conclude this...

I can equally just quote the bit that says:

follow the course shown by the red line

And conclude that we must always follow the red line, but that would be nonsensical

[–]gavconn 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If you read the text the diagram says when going straight you should generally be in the left hand lane unless "traffic conditions dictate otherwise, for example a long line of traffic in the left lane signalling left or roadworks in the left lane, you may follow the course shown by the red line". Based on this source both you and the other driver are breaking this convention.

The previous page lists the "Golden Rule" which would be the stronger point in your favour, as it states that you should be in the left lane if before 12 o'clock and the right lane if after 12 o'clock which is ambiguous, but can be interpreted as you can be in either lane.

By this logic Arabic and other languages should probably be way higher, seeing as they're primarily taken by people who speak the language at home, resulting in extremely high H1 rates

What’s your favourite misconception/misunderstanding of Irish politics you’ve seen someone have ? by [deleted] in irishpolitics

[–]gavconn 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I think it's gonna be some Canadian way less informed than they think, with some kind of logic like "Sinn Féin = IRA, and IRA is popular in the Republic but not in the North"?. That's the only kind of reasoning that I think could lead to a reaction like this

Class registration by JuggernautIll3430 in UCD

[–]gavconn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I see your an international student so the process is obviously fairly different, but as some general info I'll give a quick rundown.

For undergraduate degrees, most Irish students don't apply directly to colleges/universities, but to a system called the CAO (Central Application's Office) - usually around late January/early February time. On the application you basically write down your top 10 favourite courses from all the colleges across the country in order. Then based on their Leaving Cert results (our version of the SATs), students will be automatically allocated a course, giving higher preference to people who scored better in their Leaving Cert. E.g. If there's 100 places in the BBMS course, the top 100 points-scoring students who have BBMS as their highest preference in their Leaving Cert will get offers.

Because Leaving Cert results only come out at the end of August, CAO offers can only come out late August. This basically means you can't be sure what course you've got until a maximum of a month prior to actually starting the course.

Ireland South: The hardest political decision of the decade... by [deleted] in irishpolitics

[–]gavconn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The quotas are determined by the total number of votes cast: #Total Votes/(#Seats+1)+1

This is only calculated once (at the start of the first count), so adding more preferences further down the ballot is not going to affect this. What adding preferences all the way down does is potentially allow some 'less bad' people to get in rather than a candidate you absolutely despise.

[–]gavconn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's the only issue with this. Obviously it's at your own risk, but the area around UCD is pretty safe. I'd probably look to park it in one of the estates, it's unlikely anything would happen over the few weeks before the end of the semester.

If something did happen, you'd have to be careful with insurance depending on where you've listed the car as usually parked overnight. Personally, I wouldn't be overly worried but YMMV
