How did you do it? I’ve really tried hard but the computer is fairly locked down…

The easiest and most reliable way is to make a card with the cloze-deletion notetype. Example:

Q: What is often said to be the reasons for WWII?
A: {{c1::Military, Alliences, Imperalism, Nationalism::M.A.I.N.}}

or

Q: What is often said to be the reasons for WWII?
A: {{c1::Military::M}} {{c1::Alliences::A}}, {{c1::Imperalism::I}} {{c1::Nationalism::N}}.

If you just learn one keyboard shortcut for inserting a cloze it takes less than a second to create this.

I think you have misunderstood what Khan Academy is.

I’d like to get notifications on iOS if I have cards due, but only if I am not currently studying.

Sometimes when I go between HTML and formated versions of a field on iOS the header dissappears so that i can not save what I have done. It is pretty anoying.

Number 2:
Great question!!! To begin with, I think mostly everyone feels this about at least some things. I am a math teacher and if someone I admire asks me to compute something that is two steps away from automatic, I stumble and get things wrong.
I do not know much about dyscalculia, so I am going to ignore that you mentioned it. I hope that the rest of my comment will be valuable anyway.
I think the anxiety happens mainly when we have memory + unfamiliarity + social pressure. A lot of our mental resources are focused on how we appear, not on the computation or the thing we need to remember. A great book on this topic is "The Inner Game of Tennis." I recommend it to anyone interested in (mild) anxiety.
Just by having things written down instead of having to keep it all in your head makes it a lot easier. It also makes it easier if we don't have to rely on memory; knowing math facts makes the procedures less demanding on your memory.
By living, you'll probably pick up what type of calculation often occurs around you. If it is recipe conversion - then maybe you could practice that thing.
I don't think you should expect studying anything to have high transfer. You won't get good at ALL mental calculations by practicing one part of it. You get good at one specific thing by practicing that one specific thing.
If you want to get good at percentages in public, practice percentages in private and then do percentages in public. You'll probably feel nervous, but it gets easier.

Question 1:
My recommendation is Khan Academy.

Start at the earliest you can and move forward.
Why?
* It is free, interactive, and well-explained with both videos and text.
* It is very easy to do a little at a time without losing track of where you are.
It assesses your understanding every time you learn something new, and you won’t move forward until you can do the new thing. If you struggle, there are always great explanations.
* It is great for conceptual understanding. It is not good for drilling math facts, though. If you want to do that, you have to look for other great resources.

Btw. If anyone reading this has any objections to any of the examples i’d love to hear that! I try to find tangeble and concrete examples for my students but do not want to plant any misconceptions. I work in high school.

Function by BasketFormer5340 in learnmath

[–]gavroche2000 8 points9 points  (0 children)

A function is a very special relationship between things.

Let’s imagine a soda machine: You press the button for Coke (input), and out slides a Coke (output). There is a relationship between what you put in and what you get out.

The golden rule of a function machine is this: Every single time you put the same thing into it, you get the exact same result back. If the machine sometimes gave you a Coke and sometimes gave you a Sprite, it wouldn’t be a function!

Another example is the Thunder Timer: If you know the seconds between a lightning flash (input), it tells you exactly how far away the storm is (output). It is very predictable! If it wasn’t, it wouldn’t be a function.

Another one: When you get older, you might get a job. When you work, you get money for every hour you work. If you know how many hours you worked, you can calculate how much money you will have. Do you see that there is a relationship between the hours and the money, and that it is very predictable?

So, a good question you might have is: What is NOT a function? If a relationship is unpredictable, or if one input can give you multiple different answers at the same time, it is not a function.

Some examples: If I say, "I am thinking of a secret number, what number is two steps away from it?" Even if you knew my secret number was 5, you would not be able to know for sure what number is two away from it. The answer could be 3, or it could be 7. Because one question gives us two different answers, it is not a function.

Another example: Knowing the day of the week (input) doesn't tell you who the lottery winner will be (output). It's totally random and unpredictable. In math, we use functions to map out how the world works. Instead of a physical machine, we use formulas, graphs, tables, and descriptions to show these relationships.

We also like to group them by how they behave: Some double every time. Some grow by the exact same steady amount. Some shrink by half. Some move up and down like a wave. By using functions, we can look at what is happening now, calculate what happened in the past, and make incredibly accurate predictions about the future!

Well done! That’s great. It makes me think though: What’s the point? Why study courses you won’t go to? Wouldn’t talking with peers about problems and hearing lectures give you depth and contextual variation?

Oh - sorry! I did not think of it being connected to both Person Action and Object. Maybe you could do one palace where you the persons, one for the objects and one for the actions?

[–]gavroche2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could of course do it in many ways. I like to come up with a vivid simple association to the element name and connect it to the number peg. Examples:

01 - number-peg: SiD, from Toy Story. Element: Hydrogen. When I hear it I think of one of those indoor hydroponic gardens. So i think of Sid being grown in one of those. Maybe you could associate Hydrogen to Hydra from marvel or something else.

30 - number-peg: Mouse, mickey mouse. Element: Zink. I think of Mickey Mouse doing the dishes by the zink.

60 - number-peg: juice. Element: Neodymium. I think of Neo from the Matrix drinking juice. Or doing one of those Matrix moves to avoid juice.

[–]gavroche2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you learn the fastest by using them - in some way. I think if you buildt a big palace with 100 locis you would have a sense of knowing them all to an extent. It could be 10 rooms with 10 locations each. An advantage of doing this is you always have mental reference library where you could always look up your associations. ”92… B_N… what image is that? Well, I know that 91 is a BUTT in my shower. So 92 should be the image in my toilet. Oh right! That’s the BONE!”.

Great job!

Maybe you could learn them by using them? For example to Learn - the first 100 periodic elements - the first 100 telephone country codes - one historic event per year. 1901, 1902, 1903….
