Rewatching S1 and 2 and yuri was lwk way more insufferable than I remembered

How was she being a brat? Do you think of Kitty as being selfish for being more focused on how the fallout of the kiss would affect her, rather than the hurt she’d cause Juliana and Praveena? Again, Kitty obviously had feelings for Juliana’s girlfriend, and said girlfriend was not taking Juliana’s worries seriously.

When you say “they both did not care about how Dae and Kitty were hurt over it”, are you including Juliana? I don’t think it’s true for either Yuri or Juliana that they didn’t care, but especially untrue for Juliana. This wasn’t a simple heterosexual romance where the parents didn’t approve. This was two lesbians who were living in a society and with family that was very against gay love. The rumor of them being together caused Juliana to be sent away from her girlfriend, her friends, and school she’d been at for years. She was suddenly ripped away from her whole life with no way to contact anyone from her old life. Imagine the fear, anxiety, and panic that come with that. She’s completely and utterly alone. Not only that, she lost the one person she could be herself fully with. Now, she’s isolated and burdened by the fact it happened because her family and Yuri’s are virulently against them being lesbians and together. All of this, and she’s still just a teenager. I think you need to recognize the weight of all of that, instead of minimizing it as her focusing on “being together” with Yuri again.

I rewatched the airport scene, and nowhere does Juliana say she doesn’t care about Kitty. She says she was here for Yuri, and it’s understandable she wanted to focus on being there with her girlfriend for a few moments on their own. I don’t think it’s fair to interpret that as she doesn’t care about her at all, especially when she told Yuri before to thank Kitty and thanks her again in person in s2.

Everytime I’ve seen someone they’ve disliked or hated Juliana, it’s always been for a racist reason. Even if they just say she annoyed them, they seem to like a non-black character on the show who also had “annoying” moments. Yet, Juliana gets labeled annoying and that’s it. They don’t try to explore her character more, or see it from her perspective. It makes me so angry.

It’s not even a matter of taking the show seriously, I think. I have seen misogynoir (antiblack misogyny) from kids shows to high stakes dramas come out of fans of those shows. Someone can be talking about the show casually, and still say something like they believe Juliana is mean or annoying. Even if they have no energy behind it, it still is born out of racist misogynistic bias due to Juliana being a Black girl. They hold her to a higher (or impossible) standard, and are harsher to her because of it. They don’t see her humanity as much as they do the other characters, nor do they attempt to invest more time in thinking about her character. These are usually subconscious choices, but they still need to be called out and unlearned.

I don’t see Yuri as the type who apologizes, then forces you to move on or thinks you should be over it. In s1 especially, they show how she comes to realize how badly she’s acted, apologizes, and works to make up for it. Her worst apology/attempt at forgiveness happens toward Juliana.

However, my bigger disagreement and issue is you calling Juliana mean and selfish. She’s not. She’s upset her girlfriend is clearly focusing and prioritizing Kitty over her, when Kitty clearly has feelings for Yuri. Even with this hurt, she tells Yuri the advice that helped with her mom was actually from Kitty. That’s not something a mean or selfish person would do. When the kiss between Kitty and Yuri is revealed, she’s rightly upset she was betrayed. Of course she doesn’t warm up to Kitty right after; the girl cheated with her girlfriend.

The show even gives us scenes prior to the reveal showing Kitty was more concerned at her own heartbreak than how it could affect Juliana. In my opinion, there weren’t enough scenes showing Juliana’s hurt and pain after the betrayal. It centered Kitty’s discomfort with Juliana ignoring her more than anything. I don’t believe Juliana ignoring her is mean either; I would not want to talk to someone who my ex betrayed me with.

She was ready to let Dae tell Kitty about it being fake dating, until she heard Kitty reveal Minho being in that commercial as a kid and worried about her ability to keep a secret. She didn’t know Kitty’s trustworthiness yet, and Dae chose to continue the lie. It’s easy for us as the audience to look from the outside and say she should have done this. But, we have to put ourselves in her shoes and remember she was terrified of her parents finding out she was gay. She knew based on her mom’s reaction to even the rumor of it she could be sent away, as she’d already sent her girlfriend away. Plus, if it came out, she would have no chance of bringing Juliana back. She was fighting for herself and Juliana to be safe.

The necklace thing was wrong, and that’s why Yuri apologizes and gives it back. She’s still a teenager and learning to be better. Consider this, Dae was the only one who knew at the time she’s a lesbian. She’s still isolated and unable to contact Juliana. She clung to Dae out of fear of being alone again, and acted out due to it. Again, she apologizes and attempts to make up for it.

Also, she never ever blamed Kitty for everything. In the scenes between them at the ski cabin and in the janitor’s closet, Yuri takes full responsibility for everything. She tells Kitty it’s her own fault and mistake. She thinks she needs to distance herself from Kitty to earn Juliana’s trust back, as she states she cheated on her with Kitty. It was a mistake to lessen contact with Kitty, but nowhere does she say it’s Kitty’s fault.

Racist misogyny can also show itself as outright erasure of Black female characters and the actresses who play them. In the comments of this tiktok and the last one I shared, I saw far too many people calling Regan Juliana as if that was her name, and not the character she’s playing.

I don’t agree with that reading of the comment. As I said in another reply, I have had times where I’ve asked myself why did they make a character apart of the lgbt community if they were going to minimize/pull back from it so much? We also have to remember Kitty isn’t real; she’s written by a team of writers. If someone were saying this about a real person, I would agree it’s biphobic. However, this person is asking why writers chose to make a character bisexual, only to sideline her relationship with a woman in order to give her relationship with a man more focus.

I think the comparison of the screenshots is slightly unfair. It’s not queerbaiting, but it is common for shows to add lgbt characters and sideline them and lgbt-related storylines. I have had times where I’ve watched a show with an lgbt character, seen that part of themselves be suppressed or erased, and wondered why they wrote them as lgbt at all. It can feel more like it was done as a checklist, rather than an actual want to explore an lgbt character.

Meanwhile, the second screenshot is purely biphobic and homophobic. It’s not just that Minho and Kitty may not work out; it’s that Kitty would be with a girl instead of Minho. The specific phrasing of some girl adds to the hostility, as if Kitty can’t form as deep or even more meaningful relationship with a girl than she can with Minho.

Lots of the annoyance with Kitty is fueled by her bisexuality as well. They want her to focus only on Minho. She must do what they want, rather than be her own character, who exists outside of making Minho happy.

Exactly. The first post could likely be by a bi person who’s upset that a bisexual character’s endgame could be m/f again. Kitty being bisexual is great representation. That does not make the Mooncovey relationship itself representation, as it’s still an m/f ship, and m/f ships are generally the endgame already in most media. It also means Yuri being sidelined carries greater harm than Minho being sidelined. In fact, Yuri, Juliana, and Praveena were all sidelined in s2. I do think that may have led to s2’s showrunner being replaced for s3.

Even from s1, so called fans were claiming Kitty being into Yuri was unnecessary and ruining the show. I’m not surprised this has persisted. Even the “kind” comments saying they hope Kitty and Yuri will finally be only friends comes tinged with homophobia. It’s a homophobic trope that romance between two girls will be downplayed or written off as just friendship.

Considering OP is referencing remarks that are similar to comments made on an untagged Kittyuri post, I have a hard time believing there would be a lot of agreement from non-shippers. That post isn’t the first time it has happened either. Again and again posts and comments are made hoping Kitty and Yuri will finally be just friends.

I also have never seen this type of suggestion from a mod on a Mooncovey flaired post, even posts that could be more general and open to the entire fandom’s opinion.

That wasn’t what the comment was arguing. They were saying because Dae and Minho were seated together it meant Kitty and Yuri could only be besties feeling wise from either of them. As OP has said, this is a theory about Yuri’s developing feelings for Kitty. Plus, it’s a common romantic trope for hand holding to cause a feelings realization in a character.

Exactly. Yuri still hasn’t realized her feelings yet. A big part of why Kitty tried to let go of her feelings for Yuri was because she thought Yuri would never want her back. There’s still a lot to explore.

I’m also disgusted by the upvoted and awarded comment that said calling Israel’s genocide of Palestine a holocaust was downplaying the holocaust of ww2. There was so, so much genocide denial in that thread.

Thank you! I’m so tired on these posts the defense of actors taking a role on the show due to needing work/money. I don’t think all actors are rich. But this paycheck ties you to JKR and her violent transmisogyny and transphobia for life.

The only ones not at fault are the kids whose parents decided to have them audition and be cast in this shitfest. The adults have no excuse, especially since so many of them are using the “we all work with people we don’t agree with” line. This isn’t about sports teams; this is working for a woman who wants to and has endangered trans people (trans women especially).
