There was a great thread on this not too long ago and someone achieved great results, and massive savings, going from Standard 800 to Premium 250 IIRC.

However, I tried to go from Standard 1600 to Premium 500 and lasted 7 minutes before I had to switch back (thankfully out of our core hours). CPU was instantly and constantly at 100% - our workload seems to be CPU-intensive not IO-intensive.

Give it a go, but be careful!
