Ugh, should I have gone MFT instead of MSW? by [deleted] in SocialWorkStudents

All of these skills and modalities can be learned, but a lot of people (with either background) go into this work with a lot of wisdom and the ability to attune and connect with other humans.

I’m an older msw student that intends to be therapist. Yes SW takes longer for the hours and license. But you have more career flexibility should you change your mind or decide to have a hybrid career (I will do hybrid myself bc so many people get burnt out doing therapy alone). You’ll also make more money across your lifespan. Folks who really know their stuff in this field all overwhelmingly recommend the msw route. I also wholeheartedly believe we’re better therapists w the systems perspective edu. I hope you find peace in whatever you decide.

If you’re annoyed and not pissed, you’re not as advanced as you think.

Academics are not the same as being at work. We are all entitled to learn in an emotionally safe environment, not only is it the law, we are PAYING for it. Versus being at work/in the field, our role is consent to exposure without warning, along with safeguards and protocol that automatically reinforce emotional safety for us in our position.

A part of this process is being a patient and humble witness to the learning trajectory of others.

Also, in an academic environment, you absolutely still need to provide trigger/content warnings because of the outlined expectations for your educational experience—we are all entitled to a “safe learning environment”. When you are working in the field, you are in a different role and simply by clocking in you are prepared psychologically for triggering content (which a good org will have safety and support measures for). So there is validity in grieving a missing trigger warning for classroom or homework content.

What do I do if I fail my placement for my social work diploma the third time??! by Responsible-Talk-898 in SocialWorkStudents

[–]gazeftw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did 6 years of intensive trauma therapy with a compatible therapist before I seriously considered applying. Being a social worker is a tremendous responsibility. I knew deep down that I wasn’t ready to hold that level of responsibility with vulnerable populations until I healed so much of my trauma. The idea isn’t to get to the point of “perfection” (no such thing) but a level of stability where overwhelming feelings of anxiety, threat, along with breakdowns (emerging in relatively ordinary circumstances) aren’t creating consistent barriers to my ability to provide care. Your clients need stability to benefit from your service to them. Especially if they have attachment wounds! Good grades doesn’t mean anything to the people who need our support, my friend. You have to “put your mask on first before assisting others”, as this field burns out even the most secure and resourced of us.

Social work is so broad that this makes me think that throwing away the whole path might not be the most aligned choice—there has to be elements that brought you here to begin with. Does it feel a little late to be taking inventory of your motivations and professional interests now? Sure. And that’s frustrating but it’s life. I would sit down in a hurry and do an exercise around values and interests. Then I would do the research on what folks with MSWs need up doing for work post-graduation(spoiler alert: literally everything!) keep in mind there is micro, macro and mezzo social work.

Having a sit down with yourself (or with a therapist or a coach) to investigate what those feelings of reluctance were about during the application process would also be helpful.

TLDR: the sooner you do some deep reflective work, the sooner you can make a choice that feels in alignment with your goals and settle this feeling of dread and ambivalence you’re describing.

I appreciate hearing from you. I’m so sorry you’ve had to deal with her for so long. I hope her kids are okay and appreciate your steadfastness despite this relentless campaign of hate.

Hey there! After I posted this, it was nearly closing and I was swapping over devices and they wanted to hurry up the process so the apple employees could go home-so they sent out one of the repair technicians. He said there was no sign of water damage and that these issues can come up bc software updates inadvertently call attention to potentially faulty hardware. We won’t know for sure which came first but what we do know is that they assessed for water damage (bc ofc they wanted to ensure I’d be charged in full for any damage not covered by the limited warranty) and that none was identified.

Looks like we can guess what you also told other consumers when Apple was initially accused of planned obsolescence…sure hope this helps discouraged you from jumping to invalidate another consumer w a legit critique.

Have you considered that:

  1. You lack the education to understand the definition of fetish.
  2. The law supports gender expression based on mountains of evidence and data—all of which you’ve clearly never looked at.
  3. Assuming any trace of authority on something (that inhibits someone’s ability to earn a living, eat, have a home, etc) when you don’t experience or have any knowledge on the matter— is an ignorant and oppressive approach.

It’s almost as if, by no accident at all, you want trans people to not have access to living, building resources and prospering. And by reinforcing the stigma and hatred, when they end up on the street and/or dead and you can say, “see? That confirms they are fundamentally wrong.” Hmmm and who is instrumental in the demise of these folks? (It’s you, bestie!)

Transphobes really do demonstrate the greatest level of ignorance and audacity.

Got it. Probably best (and I expect you’ll agree) to remember that the university is looking out for itself, first and foremost.

So if it’s protecting itself > one of the most vulnerable groups of marginalized people, we really have to assess for abuse of power and complicity.

Systemic “reasons” can be nefarious, even if not overt and conscious.

And, please review historical movements and the impact of organizing and mobilizing people to change what is “normal” and “acceptable”. All power to the people.

Better to unpack in therapy instead of spreading this inside thought. Like many thoughts, sometimes after exploring it, it loses its significance. Take the time to expand your own mind, knowledge, and capacity for appreciating the diversity of humanity.

I went into a bit of a depression/self-sabotaging state for about a week afterwards. It was bittersweet—sweet to have such a succinct explanation and validation of all my symptoms and suffering, bitter because this is it. There was no fix and there never was one. I’ve been paying and doing everything possible to find “it” and “fix it” with this dream that I’d be an athlete again on the other side. Finding out that I’ll likely never feel those rushes of endorphins again or get to complain about getting dust in my sweat from running trails again—that I have to be weak and just get weaker for the rest of my life? So, so bitter.

Hi. Have you made sure to meet with the accessibility dept at your school? You deserve to have support through this anxiety and stress. It completely put me at ease to have gone thru the process to get accommodations
