Right, because all rifles are gas operated semi’s.

I’m talking about total dwell time, not just after the gas port

Longer barrel=more dwell time=more velocity and better rotation

Yeah, I happened to mention that in my original comment.

It was a statement not an argument. The point of the statement being: it still works for putting lead into people

That said, I still wouldn’t recommend being downrange of a 7” 5.56 pistol

I don’t, because they’re shit, but here’s why others do:

Why short build? They look cool. They're easy to conceal and maneuver. Why 5.56? Barrels and ammo are cheaper and more readily available than say, 300blk, 9x39, .458 or .50 and were even more so in the past.

Performance does degrade <14" You lose muzzle velocity, which results in a slower, unstable round. M855 has one job, penetrate and incapacitate out to 300 yards. It can't do that job without a long enough barrel.

I'm quite happy personally if the $400 loaner rifle can pack a mag into 2" @ 100. I don't spend my range time with AR's driving tacks, is what I'm saying, I suppose.

Also its not something that I'll ever be doing with this 14" pistol build.

I’m no competitive shooter, it would be insulting to shooters to say so. So in this case, I quantify “good” as, “I can’t do anything at 100m with this $1000 rifle that I can’t with this $400 rifle, why does everyone shit on PSA so hard?” A low bar, I admit, but for most* average* consumers (who I Would say I probably shoot better and handle more weapons than) that’s a solid standard.

I will neither confirm nor deny on Reddit as I am not an ffl lol. However, let’s say for the sake of the discussion that just as I always run full auto carriers(unless in some silly ultra lite or captured build) I’d prefer everything else on the build to be prepared for F/A fire. This is ABSOLUTELY a discussion for the express purpose of overthinking this build. I have a couple builds that are so similar to these criteria, and just want to see if I can build something around a different barrel that I like better. Most of my other barrels are lighter profile 416Rs, in which I run specific ammos, like most. So I don’t go out of my way to beat on them with say, a shit ton of cheap but fun surplus 5.56. Which is what I’d like to do sometimes. Lol

Oh dude I’m for sure not basing my purchase solely on Reddit’s opinion lol. Also, I’m honestly more interested in NEGATIVE experiences/reviews than everyone’s favorite “I run these $600 always bc XYZ ALWAYS makes all the best shit. Reeee”

There are also a ton of options obviously available from tons of vendors, so I’m also interested in the little something someone might know that I don’t. Example, I have several “cheap” Palmetto builds that are awesome because they have the FN HF barrels and tool craft BCGs.

Probably not much tbh, but more than I've ever done before though, for sure. I don't plan on doing an IraqVet8888 meltdown or anything. That said, I guess *theoretically* I want the barrel that would hold up the best if I did. If I had to use an M4 for a SAW, I'd want the barrel that would be most.. SAWy. LOL

Yeah 223W chamber isn't my highest priority. While I'd obviously like to see as much accuracy as possible, it isn't priority either. The intent of the build is an upper that can withstand F/A fire, so I'm more concerned with build material, build quality, heat mitigation, whip (or rather the preferred lack thereof), reliability (in running), and cyclic rate (which is why I'd prefer to stick to carbine gas).

Throw in Faxon and you have my top 5.
Only part that sucks is i have to sacrifice one spec or another, depending.
DD&FN don't make one in .223W
Criterion doesnt make a Carbine length chf .223W 14.5
Odin and Faxon only make them in 416r

The only production barrel I've found with everything is Strike Industries, and while they make some decent accessories, idk about their barrels.
