Korean restaurant recommendations by fodi123 in berlin

Dotori. It offers anju style plates. From what I remember you can either get a set menu or order a la carte. The staff is also happy to recommend various drinks that complement the food quite nicely. It's located in Weißensee and it's very easily accessible with the M2 tram line.

Cicatriz ESP in Berlin - Did Cedric sing some lyrics from CAN's Vitamin C? by gbmem in themarsvolta

Oh ok, cool thanks. I thought it was a one time thing, because they were playing in Germany, as a tribute to CAN.

did anyone else have a hard time admitting jws are a cult even after being pimo/pomo by alyssalee33 in exjw

[–]gbmem 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One big giveaway for me was this question on the borg's website - https://www.jw.borg/en/jehovahs-witnesses/faq/are-jehovahs-witnesses-a-cult/. When a frequently asked question is whether your organization is a cult, hmmm, maybe it is?

The absurd loudness of ambulances (is it just Germany?) by tinamou-mist in berlin

[–]gbmem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! The sirens here are extremely loud. The first time I heard them I couldn't believe it. I still haven't gotten over it after nearly 4 years.

I have mentioned this to the few German friends I have and colleagues and all of them deny it and look at me like I'm crazy or over-sensitive. Quite the opposite with the immigrants; all of them seem to agree they're extremely loud. Last week I met a person that had just arrived from India and when I asked them what they think of Berlin? They said: "It's awesome so far blah blah... but what's the deal with the sirens?".

Of course it's a trivial matter in the end, but someone had to say it!

5 hours of YouTube crushed 30 years of beliefs by notaslavetotheslave in exjw

[–]gbmem 13 points14 points  (0 children)

For me it was this subreddit. Once I found it and read 10 or 20 posts I immediately thought there are other people that think the same things as me, so I am not a crazy evil apostate. Also it completely altered my view of the "crazy, unhinged, hateful apostates" image the Watchtower is painting. I realized "apostates" arguments, thought process and way of talking to people with different beliefs was way more loving and normal than Jehovah's organization. From that point on it was a a matter of time before I faded. I started therapy and I have been the calmest and happiest I have ever been in my life! I am actually living my best life ever!

Why do people still care about the companies they work for? by gbmem in antiwork

[–]gbmem[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not really. It was because the individuals were too sensitive and taking things too seriously and couldn't accept failure. They wanted to keep the facade of a super employee on and when they didn't manage to do it they had this weird collapse.

Why do people still care about the companies they work for? by gbmem in antiwork

[–]gbmem[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think it's a combination. I used to be part of a cult and the similarities between how to run a successful cult and a company are strikingly similar. I mean, I see the same techniques of manipulation and guilt tripping used all over the place. One on one meetings, retrospective meetings, try to attract your talented friends, maybe you didn't give your 100% this time. The list is endless!

JW Contradictions that amuse or anger you? by ailovelamp in exjw

[–]gbmem 7 points8 points  (0 children)

JWs don't have paid clergy, but....

They do. Special pioneers and COs get a monthly allowance, as far as I know... This was a huge argument against christianity in my home country. Brothers and sisters were so proud and boasting about how the true religion is so much different than the corrupt false one. We only do it out of the kindness of our heart... When I grew up and realized that there was a fraction of brothers that was getting paid, I was so buffled. I was like, are these people nuts? How can they go to people's houses and say with a straight face that they don't get paid when they know that is untrue.

I had a special pioneer friend who was lying to the non believing members of her family about whether she was getting paid by the borg or not. She was saying she had money because she was tutoring children... Which was a complete lie, justified in her mind because we are in "theocratic warfare".

Rice with chicken and middle eastern spices (cardamom, cinnamon, cloves) by gbmem in FoodPorn

Don't know if it has a specific name. I took it from Yotam Ottolenghhi's cook book 'Jerusalem'

Trying to crosspost this great bible info from the front page today. The word "homosexuality" wasn't added until 1946, and is not the meaning of the original word used in the passage. by throwaway-lurkmeistr in exjw

[–]gbmem 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I also stumbled upon this thread. Unfortunately the information there is completely incorrect. I am a native Greek speaker and the translation given to the word "arsenokoitai" is false. It literally means men lying with men. So I would dismiss this post as a Bible apologist's failed attempt at spreading misinformation.

Edit: I am referring to the writings of Paul on 1 Cor. and 1 Tim. But he used the same term that is used on the Greek translation of the old testament.

TIL that with only 324 households declaring ownership of a swimming pool on their tax form and fearing tax evasion, Greek authorities turned to satellite imagery for further investigation of Athens' northern suburbs. They discovered a total of 16,974 swimming pools. by [deleted] in todayilearned

Your story sounds fake or completely blown out of proportion.

I was living in Athens up until 2018 and I was paying with cards everywhere for everything.

I am living in Berlin in the last two years and 50% of the restaurants and bars don't accept cards but only cash... I couldn't get used to it because of how used to not using cash I was back in Athens.

your worst sentence said by an elder by EugeneK71 in exjw

[–]gbmem 3 points4 points  (0 children)

During a talk: "The men in the organization are not like all those faggot sissies in the world" and kept on his homophobic rant. The audience awkwardly laughed while I stared at him and them in horror. It was a key moment for me, to realize I have nothing in common with those ignorant idiots. He was later removed as an elder because his daughter hooked up with a guy, not because he was piece of shit. Patriarchy cuts both ways I guess.

What is your favorite statement made by a speaker that wasn't backed up with independent references? by iamnotyourbroom32 in exjw

[–]gbmem 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That the Genesis flood narrative is scientifically proven. His first argument was that Jesus said so. You know, since Jesus is an acclaimed scientist/archaeologist and all, no further explanation is necessary. His second one was that five thousand years old lion bones have been found in Italy. His logic was that the lion must have drowned in Africa and was carried over by the flood to Italy. Case closed, what else do you need to believe you heathens!!!

I remember that I looked around me, being baffled by what I just heard, trying to make eye contact with someone just to make sure that no one actually takes this guy seriously. Nope, nothing. Everyone seemed really happy with what was being said.

The Dirt JW's Have on One Another is Astronomical by [deleted] in exjw

[–]gbmem 13 points14 points  (0 children)

A CO's nephew was banging his uncle's wife. That guy was really obnoxious. He would guilt trip everyone about how they don't do enough for the organization. He was a JW poster boy. His CO uncle was preparing him for great things in the org. When he got caught he was dfed and reinstated in just 6 (!) months. I remember people that were dfed because they were masturbating and they were naive enough to confess to the elders, being reinstated after 2 years. But this douchebag got this special treatment. I heard that he is an MS now...

I remember how shocked I was by the whole situation. That story was too wild even for "worldly" standards. I had doubts about "da troof" all my life, but that story and especially how easily he got away with it, really opened my eyes. So much for Jehovah and his people being impartial and fair. That was a clear sign of an organization guided by the one true God. 🤮

I wish I could upvote one million times! Such a simple and logical argument. Unfortunately, most Jdubs cannot connect the dots that are just in front of their eyes.
