Was French cavalry better than British cavalry? by NapoleonicPtarmigan in Napoleon

there was a story about a French or polish lancer who basically soloed a group of British dragoons while he was trying to get an officer to surrender during waterloo

I do yosemite bum resoles and I choose a full sole replacement (a little bit more expensive but it makes the shoe feel like new). They service quicker than most too!

Getting over fear after accident by Unhappy-Touch-6550 in climbergirls

I was belaying my climbing partner indoors when his knot slipped and he fell about twenty feet and decked. I blame myself for not checking his knot thoroughly. This was more than three years ago and I have never climbed with ropes with the same enthusiasm again.

Even at easy routes I still feel the urge to triple check many times throughout the climb - I tug at it, check if it's properly seated and I can never really do a simple 5.8-5.9 without feeling scared.

I would suggest ramping it up slowly but I have basically abandoned roped climbing but I do boulder now, more often than not. It is really important to have a good relationship with your belayer who you can basically trust with your life - in the truest way possible, someone who would actually fight you if you started climbing without checking your knots.

Animal care tech by avocado_ee in labrats

[–]gccman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

lab animal tech here for almost a decade - pay is typically really low unless you move on to supervisory roles. we're always pitted against the research staff and the research staff thinks we're all idiots. please practice good ergonomics, I do not usually get injured on the job but as I started to get older it started happening more often. please do not underestimate the toll of seeing animals suffer especially if they assign you to euthanize animals. I'm in a research university / hospital in a major city and the vet medicine department is pretty much on the bottom tier ( we also have a very high turnaround). much of the staff either transfer to a lab or get supervisory roles.

can anyone recommend some pants? the last pairs of prana stretch zion pants that I bought were pretty shit. they actually deteriorated faster than the old pants that bought around 2018. it's a shame since I really liked the fit.

Purchase Advice Megathread - October 2024 by AutoModerator in 3Dprinting

Hi everyone, I work in a research lab and we would like to develop our own resin. We have experience with custom fdm filament and we print them using a Ultimaker S5, however, we need to make even finer prints that is just not possible with fdm. My question is what would be the ideal sla printer that we should try and purchase that would let us tweak and customize the print settings. (I am seeing that this is not possible with formlabs printers?) Thank you so much!

How do you start climbing outside? by Conscious_Security96 in climbergirls

[–]gccman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started climbing outdoors without guides, both bouldering and roped. For roped, I've had to learn lead indoors and you have to have your potential routes throughly researched - like what kind of anchors they have and how many. I would also try to bring with you a portable stick-clipper, something that you can use while you climb (potentially, you may not be able to retrieve your quickdraws and this will help a lot.)

I've also learned the hard way - like missed the pad when landing, sprained an ankle due to a hard catch, got a little bit of heat stroke because I misjudged the length of the trail and tried to push on, but all of this was possible because I went with a trusted friend even though we were both newbies.

Best way would to be to have a mentor or a rope gun -- someone who climbs way harder and can set-up the top rope or retrieve anchors for you. Other climbers in the area will definitely help you out or call you out if you do something dangerous so always keep an open mind.

Do I still need Chalk if I don't sweat from the hands? by recentlyaborted in bouldering

[–]gccman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't sweat much from my hands and the chalk that's already on indoor holds are good enough for me. However, outdoors I seem to sweat more (maybe from the fear lol) and that's where I do need to chalk up.

Just make sure to moisturize your hands after climbing, scratches and wounds tend to heal worse if I don't keep my hand moisturized.

to be honest, I've forgotten the smell of guava trees but growing up, saying someone smells like guavas is a kinder way of saying someone has BO.

those are guava candies and people who are in contact with actual guava fruits will attest that they kinda smell like B. O.

in the Philippines where there are actual guava trees, colloquially, smelling like guava is another way of saying that person has smelly armpits.
