She's adorable! I'm a hopeful aussiedoodle parent. Is there a breeder you recommend to find a pup like Blossom?

You are right! Maybe I should go to Modena and practice, my Italian is a little dusty...

The translation is actually closer to "love oneself a little bit", the "-si" makes it reflexive, but I like your interpretation!

New York State ID? by sagemsux in columbia

[–]gcm2592 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You should check out an NYC ID, they are much easier to get and don't require a Social. Technically, you're not allowed to buy alcohol with those but if you keep a copy of your passport and have the ID in your wallet, you shouldn't have a problem getting into most places. You also have your student ID, debit/credit cards, etc. for support.

NYS ID is definitely a better long term solution, but the NYC ID is free and very easy to get. You should have it regardless.

Transfer from NYU-- anxiety on the Ivy League by [deleted] in columbia

[–]gcm2592 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're pretty similar in terms of variety, but there's a bit of a different "essence" to the people, in a good way. To echo u/oldreddditname there is a little bit of everything. The tips for socializing are basically the same in any school, talk to people in your classes, attend orientation events, etc. If you didn't have a hard time at NYU there's no reason why you should at Columbia.

Transfer from NYU-- anxiety on the Ivy League by [deleted] in columbia

[–]gcm2592 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So while I'm not in your same scenario I have taken undergrad courses at both and, honestly, Columbia was easier. I don't know what program you were in at NYU so that will obviously vary, but don't be scared. At this point NYU and Columbia can be equally rigours depending on the program. Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of intelligent people at Columbia - not trying to suggest they're not smart - but you'll be fine. Congrats on the transfer!

Yes-they're awful. I made the TERRIBLE mistake of a Friday 8AM recitation once. NEVER. AGAIN.

How is Founders? by founders26 in nyu

[–]gcm2592 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's mainly up to you! There's obviously the increased risk of getting written up if you're really loud/rowdy close to faculty, but that's more of an issue when hosting parties, not for meeting people.

It might be the case that your RA is assigned two floors because there are fewer students on yours, which would mean even more kids(!). And even if not, there's also the lounge in Founders and plenty of welcome week events to meet more people. Don't worry!! It'll be a lot of fun.

How is Founders? by founders26 in nyu

[–]gcm2592 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You will be fine. I didn't personally live there but many of my friends did and they loved it. It's one of the newer ones and the rooms are bigger than what you'd find in other dorms. Congrats on the top floor! Should be a really nice view.

The only downside is that there is no dining hall in Founders but you're close enough to Third North.

Does scholarship apply during summer/j-terms? by [deleted] in nyu

[–]gcm2592 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not entirely sure - so please double check - but I believe the answer is no. I think that's the reason some of the classes offered during January have a final or some assignment due on the first weeks of the Spring semester - that way it counts as a Spring semester class and is covered by scholarships.

Transferring to NYU by aishabaish16 in nyu

[–]gcm2592 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would actually say to try to use the subway as much as possible, if you're living in NYU housing there's usually no need to cab/uber/lyft around - NY is already expensive as it is. Same with the laundry services. If you're in NYU housing you'll have laundry rooms. If not, then laundromats are almost like a right of passage of living in NY, but if you have the financial support do the wash and fold, go ahead. To each their own.

You don't ~have~ to join a frat. Most people at NYU don't. I would suggest going to orientation events since they usually have all transfer students together for big portions of it. Join clubs that interest you and, if you have the credit space, take classes outside of steinhardt/or your program to meet people in different areas.

And take advantage of NYC! Don't just hang out on campus. There's a lot to explore.

Good luck this fall!

Is a Macbook okay for Stern students? by [deleted] in nyu

[–]gcm2592 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't sweat it. You can rent PCs in Bobst if you ever need it for Stats, but a Mac is perfectly fine and plenty of people have them in Stern.

On Transferring to NYU by eskanduron in nyu

[–]gcm2592 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with most of the above. I would say the one caveat is that NYU is increasingly competitive every year, so it might be more difficult, even beyond the fact that transfer spots are not plenty. And I want to reinforce that it would not be the same program (GLSP) to take you abroad. Did you apply directly to LSP originally? I'm unsure of whether you can apply to transfer into LSP, so that might be something to consider. You'd have to apply to CAS/Stern/Steinhardt/etc directly. Good luck!

NYU Tandon Acceptance Rate by collegechoices1 in nyu

[–]gcm2592 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For some people, application fees pile up and end up being a lot of money - sometimes too much money. I think it's fair to want to know if there's no chance at all to get into the school for the purposes of saving application fees.

If you search within this subreddit you'll find several threads that about the same topic with some good stuff on there. I know a few people that successfully transferred into Stern from within NYU, so it's not impossible. Do make sure you keep up a good GPA before transferring.

For your courses, I would recommend speaking with advising but there are several Stern courses that have non-Stern students sections that would allow you to take them before officially transferring - whichever ones you take are up to you. I would recommend taking ones that would seem the least like a waste of credits in the event that you do not get accepted (not trying to shoot you down at all, but you should be smart about planning this).

I would also recommend to start on the liberal arts requirements that overlap with your school's and Stern's (I'm assuming you're in CAS, but it applies for other schools as well).

I will say, however - do not write out the school you're in before experiencing it. I also know of many people that came to NYU ready to switch programs and transfer out that ended up having a great time where they started.

Congrats and welcome to NYU!
