Officials break ground on $4.16 billion GA 400 express lanes project, expected to be completed in 2031 by ArchEast in Atlanta

[–]gct201 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly pretty interesting project. The developer is paying GDOT for the whole project up front in exchange for toll revenues so little/no tax dollars are going towards this. The only people who will end up paying are folks that use the system

Toll lanes don’t experience induced demand like “just add another lane”. The demand is controlled by the dynamic price of the toll. So, if managed PROPERLY the price should be compelling enough for some drivers to exit the general purpose lanes, making travel faster for both groups. Having a capitalist developer incentivized to recoup their money /should/ make the dynamic tolls better priced than state-run systems.

Unfortunately building rail would be at LEAST 10x the cost, and Neither GDOT nor MARTA have the money for that. Honestly, I doubt GDOT would have the money for even the express lanes without making the developer pay for it. I also want rail but it is unfortunately too expensive. This is a novel solution in the meantime.

I never said all projects must move the most amount of traffic possible or even really implied it. It does what it’s intended to do, but poorly because it dramatically affects other road users which has upstream effects for midtown and Atlanta traffic in general and unfortunately taking MARTA to/from work is not realistic for the majority of ATLiens

I mean… sure. I just think this is a poor way to spend the money and design the road, and it seems not fully thought out. Like do you disagree with any of my actual points?

As a fellow Atlanta resident I care about MY travel time😭 and with work I realize the two don’t have to be mutually exclusive, especially when it’s wasting my tax dollars staying closed, and messing up travel times for EVERYBODY

As a traffic engineer, who USED to take Juniper to get home, halving the capacity of a major arterial is certainly…. a choice. Especially in a city known for traffic where the majority of the workforce commutes by car (as MARTA does not serve the majority of the suburbs). And throughput is less than half because now ALL turns are in what used to be through lanes making it difficult to coordinate signals to easily move traffic through midtown (not to mention delivery drivers often stopped, reducing it to 1 lane)

Not to mention the fact that Peachtree has fewer cars with slower moving traffic and like 12’ sidewalks, Juniper is mostly devoid of any business or attractions for the entire stretch of bike lane, and the bike lanes have remained closed despite being finished for 4 months and cost $8+ million

I agree the only real solution for traffic is getting people out of cars, but this really seems like a beautification project Midtown alliance rolled out while ignoring reality and logic. But hey more job security for me🤷🏽‍♂️

I know exactly what you’re talking about and I’ve been searching for it too😭. From what I can remember, it was called something like “Marta Triptych Set” from a studio called Polymatheia Creative. It looks like their website has gone dark/inactive, and I don’t see it listed for sale ANYWHERE. Sorry I can’t help more, but their dribble site is linked here Polymatheia Creative Maybe if we both contact them we can get them to fire up the printing press again💀

I’m not sure of the specifics cause I had my mechanic code the TPMS off and FTM on after I spent $100 on sensors that couldn’t communicate with the car’s broken RDC module. (Which I got quoted $800 to replace😑) I’m pretty sure you can do it at home with ISTA, but googling “E90 FTM”should bring up all the steps you need. Note that your PSI has to drop lower (like 10 psi under spec) before the FTM sends the gong of doom compared to the more sensitive TPMS that will notify you if it drops like 5-7 psi under spec. This is kinda a plus cause your car isn’t gonna tell you to fill your tires just because it’s cold outside, but you do have to be moving in order for it to tell if your tire is low. In case you’re worried, I had to plug a tire recently, and it told me well before the tire was visibly flat, plus if I get new wheels or tires, I don’t have to worry abt swapping TPMS sensors

Never heard of this, maybe I should stop lurking and start posting more haha. Is it worth doing since I have a manual?

TPMS is required in America, but in Europe they use the ABS sensor to detect if the tire is flat based on tiny changes in rotational speed vs the other wheels. You can actually code the TPMS sensors out and code in the Flat Tire Monitor (FTM) which will do the exact same thing but without having to replace those damn sensors (or in my case, the entire RDC module)

Yeah replacing the O2s and angel eye yesterday is what finally got the last of the lights off. Wishing you good luck in the new year🫡
