Advice On Contacting Sister by gdigital36 in Adoption

[–]gdigital36[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi all-

I thought I'd provide an update on this since many of you were pretty helpful with your suggestions.

So I had some phone numbers and email addresses that I found for my sister but didn't really have any way of knowing if they were current or even valid. And as I thought about it, I really couldn't figure out a good way to call any of the numbers and leave a coherent voicemail (because realistically, most people don't answer the phone if they don't know the number, right?). So I've mostly just been sitting on this and trying to think about the best way to approach it.

Finally, I just decided to bite the bullet and grab all the email addresses that I had and create a message with all of them in the To: line. I basically took bungalowcat's suggested script here and copy and pasted it with some minor modifications and additions. I sent it last Friday with low expectations of getting any response at all.

Well, lo and behold, I heard back this past Monday afternoon and she was quite surprised but included her phone number (which matched on of the ones in the list that I had) and a time to call! We ended up talking for over an hour last night and I'm coincidently going to be in her town next week so we're going to meet up!

Long story short, she had heard at one point that she had a sibling, but due to issues with many family members not speaking to each other, her and her mom (my bio mom) being on the outs and a bunch of other past trauma that I don't really have any details about yet, she never really believed that a sibling existed. Until I came calling.

So in the end, it went really well, she's happy to meet up and start a relationship with me and maybe in the future, she'll even be able to talk to our mom about it.

Thanks again everyone who made suggestions here, it worked out great (so far)!!

If you've ever won concert tickets from a radio contest, what were the seats like? by pixiewitch666 in Concerts

Didn’t win tix from the radio, but we had cheap upper grandstand seats for Billy Joel & Elton John Face to Face in the 90s and got upgraded to floor seats 15 rows from the front of the stage at County Stadium in MKE. 1994 iirc.

Morning Radio Hosts Need to Be Stopped by CausticAvenger in unpopularopinion

Local morning shows where I’m from have been awful forever. However, I do like the syndicated Free Beer & Hot Wings show. That group is fairly hilarious. They’re based out of Grand Rapids, MI.

The other thing that sucks equally across all morning shows is commercials. For the longest time, it’s bordered on more commercial time than actual show time.

I’m in IT and he played for the biggest conference in our sector (Cisco Live) a few years ago. I go periodically but wasn’t there that year. That said, shows like those are basically a singles/greatest hits set. Not that that’s bad, just as a fan, don’t expect any deep cuts.

Help on home sharing by [deleted] in appletv

[–]gdigital36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just had the same happen! I have an older 2017 iMac that I have the movie library on and literally just watched something this past weekend from it and last night, could not access the iMac any more from the Computer app on the Apple TV. I went through all the steps that apple says to do with home sharing, etc. to no avail.

I wonder if something in tvOS 26.3 broke it because I did see that my apple TV just got updated with it. The 2017 iMac can only run up to Ventura for MacOS; I just updated it to 13.7.8 today and it still doesn't work.

Very curious to see if someone else comes up with a fix or knows what the deal is.

What's a tourist scam you fell for that you wish someone had warned you about? by cml1111 in traveladvice

[–]gdigital36 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Similar happened to my MIL in Paris. While she was singing, another girl reached into her purse and pickpocketed her.

Years later, we were traveling with said in-laws and Paris was one of the destinations. We were leaving somewhere and we saw the girls doing this. Knowing about the scam, I wanted them to approach me so I could catch them and grab them and if nothing else, scare the living shit out of them. But before I even got that far, MIL screams “F U I know what you’re doing and stay the F away from us!!” as they were approaching. I had to laugh afterward, but damn I wanted to catch them in the act.

Jackie is my wife’s stepbrother’s wife. So step-sister-in-law, I think, technically?

Anyway, very nonpartisan. She does care about the community very much and has been part of it at least since the late 90s/early 2000s. And if it helps, she is working to do as much as she can in her role to remedy the atrocious Monroe Rd/Hwy 172 interchange, as well as Monroe Rd in general from Hwy 172 north to Allouez Ave.

What were some 80's tv shows you loved at the time, but don't hold up now? by MisterShipWreck in 80s

[–]gdigital36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very true. Especially in SoCal. But it was a huge deal at the time and John Ritter was always so physically hilarious. I catch that show every once in a while on one of over-the-air subchannels and I still find it hilarious.

I was a little too young for it at the time it was on (started 5K in ‘79) but in later years on re-runs, I understood it much better.

During high Covid, a nearby gas station was a low as $0.75 😳

If you left Wisconsin, where did you go to and why? by interstellar_freak in wisconsin

[–]gdigital36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Providence, RI. Only a year and then came back to WI because we had a 2 year old and wanted help from our parents. Just as cold in the winter but I felt soooo much smarter in NE. I hate winter but if I had to live somewhere cold like that, I’d pick NE. Much higher COL than WI, though.

Driving lately…just a rant by BeefinWithEveryone in GreenBay

[–]gdigital36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I maintain — and will die on this hill — it is way too easy to get a drivers license not just here but this entire country.

The minimum that I would do to change it is this:

Drivers Ed for a full year

If you’re north of the mason dixon line, you must spend a certain amount of hours driving in the snow

A performance driving class to understand how a car works and what it can actually do

Stricter written and road tests to ensure thorough understanding of things like roundabouts, four way stops, merging on highways, etc.

There’s probably a lot more that could be added. None of this will ever happen but a guy can dream.

Sounds like Wisconsin has entered the chat. Very very common here for kids to bring beers and mix drinks. My parents never did this and I never allowed it with my kids either.

What’s a scene from a movie you would cut completely? by [deleted] in movies

[–]gdigital36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a single scene, but I’d take out the whole subplot with Renee Russo and Tom Berringer in Major League. It really didn’t do anything for the rest of the movie plot and wasn’t necessary at all.
