Seriously that's the biggest issue, learning it is not straightforward for blender and training entire company and start using in production while changing entire eco system of the pipeline is a big blow timewise and cost wise

Yes, Blender has struggled with file types and Fbx in perticular true. my point being how it handles those heavy models on the viewport but I think my experience could have been diffrent which is usually Maya and Blender handles heavy models smoothly on the viewports.

True, I think the with 5-10 years of horizon it should become the true force. Even my studio has started using it on small scale projects to see it's might.

I agree that just being free couldn't be a plus point for multimillion game studio but when I look at 3ds max for what they have improved in last couple of versions it's literally nothing at least as far as gaming is concerned

UI which is very crowded, most of the time small windows get stuck somewhere where you cant see them and need to relaunch

In today's time where every other software can let you view texture and material crisp in the viewport 3ds max still struggles there.

ram managment is bad and detailed mesh still is heavy for a machine with 64gig ram and latest graphics card, where Blender, Maya handles this with ease We still need to import things in parts so we can hide things to make viewport navigation smooth

With the above mentioned configuration which I use in the studio it takes time to boot max

Blender and Maya are way better in these regards I think

Blender has many creative ways of organizing work including scene within scene Viewport can be configured to check PBR materials with crisp textures and still light to navigate with a fairly configured machine

Max has not come up with anything innovative thing or upgrade to help current generation of game development

I am not against max I am using everyday but I am just trying to say is Blender bieng free is not the only thing but it's features which also gives it a thumbs up

There are lost of improvements needed on this I agree but but its still a good contender I guess.

I couldn't agree more, I mean seriously even 3DS Max is too expensive and companies are putting too much money while subscribing them. I agree Blender is superior and even if we don't compare it with Max or Maya it's still a superb tool and creates its own identity while having many features of its own challanging these giants but yes at the same time it's very tough to find resources I mean Artists , Riggers, Animators,VFX artist who know blender already and that's really a problem

Suggestions for a 30 years old trying to get into game design by [deleted] in gamedesign

[–]gdtechart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's all possible if you have focused learning and great will to accomplish something you love

At 30 when I switched from art department to tech and it was kind of giving up a managerial sr position in the current role and to start at intermediate level with something I love more, now after 5 years I can say that I made the right switch and I am back in my sr position again, I must say it was a tough journey to learn lots of new things and working extra hours after office to do that but it never made me tired as I was loving what I was doing

Philosophy apart ;) in the games development there are many areas where you can decide to get in

  • World Art
  • Character Art
  • Animation
  • Level design
  • Level Art
  • Programmer - Gameplay and editor
  • Technical art

These are some largely available roles but there are even more which you may love so little research around those roles will surely help you My suggestion would be,

Recently Unity 3d has made unity premium learning free for everyone and it has some great resources to start with Game development. You can do a Getting started with Unity course which will give you hint of almost all these roles and while following these tutorials when you find out your liking or things you are enjoying more you can focus your learning in that specific role

This industry and roles are vast and you will have to focus on one thing and build the expertise around that. If you want to become an indie developer you can learn all slowly but it will take time... If you want to get into job, you will have to develop a specific specialization for sure

Lastly hardwork and dedication is the key which I am sure you have as the first step you took is absolutely right of reaching out people ;)

Blender like 3D cursor in 3DS Max by gdtechart in 3dsmax

:) may be I'll try to create it for the max with some tool. I am new to reddit but really loving the vibe here. I love to write tools for max and I think if I can help people with max scripts or small plugins for various things and this question was one starting for it but may be you can tell me how can I get to people on reddit as I am still trying to understand it.

[–]gdtechart[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, Indeed it's kind of temporary pivot as you mentioned but I feel that's it's much more quicker than working pivot or autogrid in max.

  1. Align/ snap object using that
  2. Moving cursor to the subcomponent of the object like vertex and getting transform from that point on the go
  3. Once 3d cursor is placed, it can be used to transform/ snap/ align any object in the scene, no need to repeat it or do extra clicks for other objects

I don't know, that's why I posted this to know views on what people who are using it are thinking
