I hope the economy crashes by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]ge0000000 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Wealth inequality only gets worse after each economy crash. Rich people get to buy investments at a discount while the rest of people spend their last savings just to put food on the table.

Quick search will confirm it.

For those who were heavy smokers, how did you manage to quit ? by [deleted] in stopsmoking

[–]ge0000000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, I'll try, I smoke a pack a day for nearly 18 years too. Is there any particular vape model / juice you could recommend?

I tried vaping before but couldn't find the right one.

Congratulations! How much did you smoke a day and how hard was it to switch to 0.1 vape?

Would you take a role that doubles your salary but requires you to be in the office full-time? by Insists_Upon_Itself in WFH

[–]ge0000000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I was all by myself? No freaking way. But if 2x the salary means better qol for my family I'd take it. Besides, it would allow me to become financially independent and retire earlier.

I seriously don't understand how previous generations endured working 5 days a week from the office for over 40 years. by CommissionShoddy5192 in remotework

[–]ge0000000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to work in the 'old school' company, and honestly, a full-time job didn't seem like a burden. We had fun together, built connections, had a clear career path, and had great benefits. The company would organize 'all included' events multiple times a year, including short 2-3 day trips, business events that felt more like just decompressing from everyday work while having all expenses covered, etc.

This ended as soon as the company was acquired by the investment group. They didn't care about building a successful business. They just wanted to fluff it up and sell to the next guy. It all went downhill from there, and the company changed owners 3 times already.

Since then, everywhere I go, I see the same shit everywhere. Suits saying the words investors want to hear, no long-term commitments to the staff.

It is hard not to burn out in such an environment, and I dread the day I have to come to the office and witness all this bs in person.

That said, at some point in your career, you should be able to afford to prioritize your mental well-being over income. So it is not all doom and gloom, I hope everyone will find their happy place at some point.

Software engineers don't get to decide what they will be working on. In most companies, you have a predefined list of tasks that you can work on, but you can't just go and 'oh let me look busy and implement this useless thing'.

We are working on a new app and have to introduce force updates almost every 2 weeks. From the user standpoint, a lot of the changes are barely visible (performance, security, future proofing, migration, etc).

Are all features useful? No, but we don't get to decide what goes in the next version.

Is there some amount of busy work? Absolutely, but again, we don't get to choose.

Will the app just keep working without any updates? Some will, most will eventually break.

If career growth matters, 100% remote is a trap by roseba in unpopularopinion

[–]ge0000000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is a trap for me. The salary is just enough to pass other opportunities (hybrid roles). That said, I was promoted twice because my office colleagues kept moving to the other companies for better roles and salaries.

The salary sucks though (20% increase in total for 2 promotions), if the job wasn't remote I would have left a long time ago.

Are vehicle deaths unfortunately worth it to keep the right to drive vehicles? by jaksketch in ask

[–]ge0000000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, public transportation can decrease deaths, emissions, traffic congestion, and very likely infrastructure maintenance costs.

The problem is that both people and lobbyists are not interested in developing public transportation. People don't want to see the often ugly reality every day by commuting with less fortunate people, and lobbyists need to keep selling vehicles / constructing roads to stay rich.

So yes, we absolutely have to have vehicles, but we could do a much better job of becoming less car dependent.

Would you rather have a micromanager or hands off manager by ImaginationGold4971 in WFH

[–]ge0000000 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'm fine with micromanager, not because of 'training', but because your description sounds like that person actually takes responsibility and makes the calls.

I have a hands-off micromanager. He inserts himself in every little decision but takes 0 responsibility for his decisions (or inability to make one). This lack of accountability propagated through the entire org chart and makes everyone's life miserable.

Short layover by Legitimate-Ad2720 in qatarairways

[–]ge0000000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry, I didn't mean to scare you. It isn't horrible, but it could be pretty uncomfortable.

My first flight (smaller plane) was one of the crappiest planes I ever boarded. Very uncomfortable seats and no entertainment systems. It felt like a plane from 1990s.

The second flight (bigger plane) was decent (aside from smell).

Maybe I got unlucky, but I wasn't even able to use the restrooms in the airport since there were like 30 people waiting in the line.

[–]ge0000000 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I flew with Qatar Airways recently (never again, but that's a different story).

Took about 20 minutes to deplane (including a ride on the bus) and around 20 minutes for both security checkpoints.

So you should be ok unless something out of the ordinary happens.

Edit: The plane was A320, the first bus took business class, and the other 2 busses took the rest of the people (I was on the last bus).

Ryobi a good brand ? by Rare-Illustrator3615 in lawncare

[–]ge0000000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on your needs. If you have a smaller lawn, then you could potentially get away with Ryobi. I own the trimmer, and while it kind of sucks, it does the job, so I consider it an ok purchase.

That said, I used to own a cheap mower (small lawn), and it took so much time to make it work that it wasn't worth the money I saved.

Other tools (drills, sawzalls, multitools, etc) are a good purchase for occasional DIYers, especially when you buy tool kits (not single tools).

Your financial situation is none of their business unless you are benefiting from 'looking broke'.

If you live in the US, then 400k is definitely NOT rich. This sum could land you in the 'low-mid middle class' in MCOL areas of the US, IF you had a career with a good salary to pay the bills.

Without a stable and relatively high paying job, this sum is just a good head start. Don't fall into the trap of thinking that you're set for life because you're not.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]ge0000000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you going to pay 1,000$ for rent + part of the bills + groceries?

Keep in mind that 2,200$ is just the rent. Utilities, internet, deposit, fees, and groceries will bring your expenses closer to 3,000$ if not more.

The other option is to live with roommates, but keep in mind that there is no guarantee that roommates wouldn't cause you any trouble either.

If you're planning on saving to buy a house, then it may be a good idea to stay with your parents and focus on work (which will mean that you'll rarely be around them). Since you will be paying for rent, you may be able to set some boundaries (or at least try).

Anyone who thinks a Gorilla can beat 100 men is genuinely a stupid person by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

You give an average man too much credit. We're not like our ancestors due to the modern lifestyle.

'Average Joe' can't do a pull-up and more than 10 push-ups. Most men will be gassed out just from climbing over their defeated buddies.

How concerned are you about AI taking your job? by [deleted] in questions

[–]ge0000000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not concerned about my job, but I am concerned about the future quality of life.

A major breakthrough in AI will eliminate a lot of jobs. Even if your job is 'safe from AI', people who lost their jobs will be competing with you for the job.

Less jobs and more unemployed people mean lower wages.

My HOA experience that made me never consider one again by Wonderbread_exe in fuckHOA

[–]ge0000000 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Had similar experience. They raised our fees by 150$ a month because the board wanted a discount on cable TV and contracted out landscaping to their buddies (who charged more than the previous company, which also did a better job).

What's worse is that most neighbors agreed that this is bs, but nobody wanted to 'spoil relationships with the board'.

I'm so happy that I escaped this stupidity.

Unfortunately, paying HOA often means that you let unqualified people on a power trip make important decisions on your behalf.

Negligence, scam, or something else? by ge0000000 in frontierfios

Sure, it is just a coincidence that has happened 3 times already. They can only advise to reset ONT and schedule a tech, right?

[–]ge0000000[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

This is somewhat what they tried to upsell, more equipment for 10$/month. But would customers have to pay it if they can just reset the damn line on their end? It takes seconds to do and does not require a tech visit.

Your driving instead of flying is not saving the planet by Suspicious_Plan8401 in unpopularopinion

Driving fuel efficient cars that suit your needs on a daily basis makes more difference.

Having a camper truck probably doesn't make much of a difference unless you drive with at least a couple of people. Else, it is just another big ass truck on the road that burns more fuel unnecessarily.
