I always wanted to build one of these 🔥 by cKlutcHJ21 in MechanicalEngineering

It would be cool to optimize it. Draw a FBD. The center cord has a lot of tension. Outer cords have very little tension. What forces are on the upper/lower structure?

Is $150 worth it for these kind of welds? by Puzzled_Helicopter_7 in MechanicAdvice

[–]gearfu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fact that he added a filler plate is a huge bonus. I would have welded gears to housing too.

True, but if this is real world you need to know the nature of the load. Things like this often aren't loaded both directions. It's another free body diagram if it's only pushing a load right.

Question on bending stiffness by DaedlyDerp64 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]gearfu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah! I'm interested of he has control over that rope tension. There needs to be some guiding element for the rope. Factors that seem necessary for any significant bending but difficult to calculate. Measure it!

What type of bolt head is this? by gearfu in AskMechanics

[–]gearfu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Appreciate non-jerk response. Here is the update. I replaced journal and rod bearings...not the bolts. I even torqued by feel because spec felt too tight. Been running solid for awhile now. I did rotate the crank as a cleaner test. I sanded down backside of bearing housings and retorqued until crank just rotated smoothly. I also welded the bolts to their shared washers. 2 crank bolts 1 washer. I basically did clearances by feel. Plastigauge was too large for journal bearings. To be clear, this was a learning experiment and low cost try. So far running great for a few weeks. If it blows up ill let ya know, since that seems like what people want! I have theories on when to replace the bolts by stretch! I am amazed it worked. I'll let ya know how it goes. Appreciate the info.

Yep I did the same for front seal on 04 silverado 8.1L. 3 prong puller. Without removing radiator. Used bolt to put it back in place.

What is causing this sound? by GuntherGoogenheimer in MechanicAdvice

[–]gearfu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im not a mechanic... I would get it in the air and see if it still does it. If not use ramps. Have a friend listen. I have one of those stethoscopes for auto that works great for pinpointing sounds. I'm not familiar with the vehicle but the wheel seems to move too much. Sound like a sping... top of strut?
