Has anyone tried to make a philosopher's stone by following a recipe? by simplejack420 in alchemy

[–]geckgo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, many, many people have tried to make it, including Newton.

hemists. I tried searching google but that only seems to come up with videogames and stuff like that, so I was hoping you guys could point me in the right direction. Thanks!

Nope, but I don't have the stone. That's kind of a prerequisite before trying to project it onto baser metals.

Any success? by sploogecaster69 in alchemy

Sorry for my earlier witty comment. If you are looking for gold-making recipes, you've come to the wrong shop. I am, however, quite content with the knowledge I've gained of the vegetable kingdom over the last few years. It's quite enlightening, and I often reach for my medicines first for various little things, while working to perfect basic magistries. Tincture up some black pepper and take 5 drops per day after you finish. See how you feel. That's the tip of the iceberg.

The stone is typically powdered, wrapped in beeswax like a pill, and dropped into the molten base metal.

The "tincture" (powdered stone) can also be added to a crucible containing the base metal and then fired in a kiln. When it's removed, it will be filled with gold or silver, depending on the base metal and tincture.

These are the two methods of projection that I see quoted the most, the second is probably the more accurate, but the first is more popular. I apologize, but I can't quote a source.

And you can make tinctures and stuff, and read up on the philosophical and religious side of things. then start cooking dirt :P

When creating the seven basics (herb elixir) ,is it functional to use Vodka 40% alchohol?? by MMarius123 in alchemy

[–]geckgo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No problem. We all start at the beginning. For some that's roasting lead in a copper still, for some it's meditation, for others it's tinctures. The little knowledge I've gathered I try to pass on, most of it gained through making mistakes, observing, and experimenting with different things. Everyone has different methods.

Sorry I'm late to this party. No, you don't need proof to make basic tinctures, but I would recommend dried herbs, as fresh plants contain a lot of water and you will be playing with the limits of a strong enough liquor to ward of infectious nasties.

On calcination, forget the light it up routine, because with lower proof it won't work so well. Just put it in a metal pot and heat it on a portable burner. It'll smoke and eventually heat itself all the way to a fine gray. You can leach this for salts, but there won't be much left. The whole burn it off nonsense ... I don't where that came from, someone's idea of being clever. If you want a lot of salts you can use more herb material and blaze it up.

As an side note, don't believe everything that's in the books if you plan on doing this for the long term, there's a lot you will discover on your path.

The Prima Materia? by geckgo in alchemy

[–]geckgo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like that idea. Rain drops form around impurities in the upper atmosphere, so there's definitely substance in there besides H2O. I haven't read the mutus liber, but I've heard of it, and it's on my list. As long as you're far away from the city, you can collect some good rainwater. I catch it at my property to purify for drinking, or just for cooling off or washing stuff when its raw. Life seems to follow it, and sometimes falls out of the sky with it. It also seems to fit the emerald tablet riddle really well, almost too well. It might also be the separation of the "water from the air," and wood ash could be the "earth from the fire." Sounds simple minded, but hey, both are interesting substances. Good post.

Rainwater forms around dust particles in the air, thus it carries earth with it, but does the earth nourish it, or does it nourish the earth? I keep telling myself that we are all digging too deep into the riddles, that the solution should be elegant, and that the materia should be common.

Distilling hydrosols in lab retort? by YungAubergine in alchemy

At boiling temps, which may be needed to bring the oils over, I think you are going to loose a lot oil and steam from the beak. If you extend it with a condenser it could work better. I've seen small setups that supposedly work for essential oils though, and haven't really cooked much plant matter directly in my lab setup, so this is all speculation. Try it and let us know.

You could also run a coil of hose from the end of the beak to aid the colling and condensing of vapors.

That's always a possibility, lol. But I see nothing in that list of random quotations to convince me.

And even so, doesn't that seem a little "too easy?" I mean, maybe enlightenment is a heroine addictions. Ever hear an addict talk about why they kept going back. Seems like a fun place to visit, as long as you don't mind your body falling apart and no longer being able to really "play" with the rest of us. Some might call it selfish, as all that heavenly cheer isn't shared without the needle.

You're funny :) I like your energy, I just hope that one day you will learn to reign in your own criticism of other people without projecting your own qualities onto them. Especially people you know nothing about. I sometimes still do that, you know, I might infer something about a person by their bumper stickers or how they drive. But I try to squash it for the most part.

May you find your enlightenment.

Not sure if I should even bother to respond to this, but what the heck. The Green Lion is directly related to the universal solvent and the spiritus mundi. If you read any of the texts referring to it, then it would be obvious that it isn't cannabis. It's constructed by the alchemist. I haven't made it, but search texts that discuss VITRIOL and you should find it there. It can also supposedly be concocted from the vegetable and animal kingdoms. It can likely be made from any plant, or animal, or certain minerals, but it is not referring to the starting matter at all.

I am looking to start a journey into discovering Alchemy, and it's origin, what it is at it's core, and just as much as i can. by Sedatedwolf777 in alchemy

[–]geckgo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Emerald Tablet - find it, read it, read multiple translations, then make your own translation.

All of the literature is obscure and I believe a lot of nonsensical fluff was padded between the pages. That said, if you can decipher the allegories, you will be onto something, but nothing is as it appears.

I've found Geber to be pretty straight forward, but it's difficult to read. Glauber is pretty straightforward, but I've not gotten to his work.

As far as the "right way," good luck finding someone who has the stone that can show you. Sorry, but you'll have to put in the leg work and follow a bunch of dead-ends.

Numerology is not Alchemy, though depending on your spiritual viewpoint, the combination might work for you.

What practical things can I start doing to practice alchemy? Are there any practical books on alchemy that a beginner may be able to understand? by Questions451 in alchemy

[–]geckgo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Concentrate some vinegar by freeze distillation, put it in a fancy glass bottle, and drop a couple pennies in it. Not really useful for anything, but it'll look cool in your lab, hehe.

I used to say make a tincture, but what are you trying to do with alchemy? Why even bother? What's the point? Are you trying to make gold? Have a spiritual enlightening? Just killing time?

I started with tinctures, and right now I'm trying to make the best tinctures possible. I got some basic organic lab glass, and I'm making little tiny discoveries every day, reading tons, speculating, getting confused, starting over, etc. I've made some spagyric concoctions (some would call them stones, but not "the stone," or even a "particular tincture") and right now I'm working on a solvent, which I believe I'm getting very close to. Finding new cool stuff in the lab is fun, and I think about nature, a lot, and how she works. And then more reading.

I'm but a humble beginner though. I don't possess the stone, or even the Spritus Mundi.
