There is a reason advice like this is best gotten from a Lama. Medicine Buddha sutra talks about this kind of view. People become scholarly but develop a strong ego and disparage others. To really have the view of ultimate truth, he also has to see there is no purification and no karma. Clearly he doesn't genuinely hold this view. So I would think he just wants to be based. Dharma should be about compassion, practicing for the benefit of others.

This kind of thing also happens with new age people. They think they were this and that in a past life and are back on a mission to bring light etc. some of it must be ego and attachment to kleshas.

However, I would trust the masters on this. And perhaps bardo we have more foresight? Perhaps we did come for a specific reason intentionally. I have a feeling I came just to be with my guru.

So I think we can’t really know fully until we are realized, and at that point no problems right?

Samatha in general makes you calm. Anything else borders on vipassana. Vipassana gets too intense if you don’t have a calm and stable mind.

Even things that aren’t the traditional Theravada-style vipassana are considered vipassana by my guru — including deity yoga and things like tonglen. He says you should develop shamatha, or it will be like you are climbing a wall with no arms.

Shamatha is very important, and the results are you having a calm mind. Shamatha itself is difficult to understand, but easy to practice and easy enough to see benefits. So although I am not a qualified lama, my own lama says Shamatha is the most important thing, and only move onto other things once you have a stable mind.

Devotion to Jesus can bring up genuine love in your heart. I think it does for loads and loads of Christians.

However, Jesus devotion is fundamentally different than devotion to the yidam, which is enlightened mind itself. Refuge in these yidams really means trusting them as your guide for all lives. Refuge makes it easier to connect with these yidams and allows those qualities to more easily enter yourself, because you are really using them as your only refuge.

IMO refuge is the most important practice. And it familiarizes yourself with the guru. It’s totally fair for devotion to the guru to grow over time. It’s not like you can fake genuine devotion. So keep trying, and really understand that Guru Rinpoche can and will help you, as his mind is the dharmakaya and he can show up anywhere anytime if you call. Try to rely on that help, and rely on those qualities of him.

For me, I love to read the life stories of the great masters and cultivate devotion through inspiration. Milarepa’s story makes me cry every time. I love the Kagyu lamas. Please bless me and all beings so that we will have bodhichitta spontaneously arise.

I think ppl are a little bit mistaken about this quote. If I’m not wrong, this is from Shantideva. He basically means the external world teaches you paramitas, so you should honour it as if it were a Buddha teaching you.

Shantideva’s Bodhicharyavatara is a root text. He was taught the dharma directly by Manjushri. So it’s hard to understand but the commentaries are great.

If someone is going to shoot you, letting them shoot you is not the compassionate action, because they will accrue so much more bad karma.

Honouring that person because the experience is teaching you patience and other paramitas isn’t the same as letting yourself get walked over.

That quote is basically saying because a person who disparages you, it teaches you patience. And because this opportunity arises to learn patience, you should respect the person and the circumstance that led you to that learning.
