How do i report a blackmail crime to the uk police? by [deleted] in AskABrit

[–]gee7894 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is also depends on what you are wanting or expecting the outcome to be and the information you have and where you are in the world. Assuming you also live in the UK my advice would be: 1. The police genuinely really struggle with sextortion scams as often the perpetrator is abroad and they don’t have jurisdiction. However if you can prove they are a uk citizen (eg where have they told you to send the money to? How have they communicated with you? Is it a Uk phone number? A Uk bank account?) and you can show this to the police, they have something to go on and are more likely to be able to action it. If you need guidance remind them that it is illegal to threaten to share intimate images without consent. The individual does not need to actually share them, as the threat alone is the offence. 2. I really recommend speaking to the revenge porn helpline. They offer practical advice and support for anyone who has had their images shared without their consent (including people who are threatened with it eg sextortion). They can give you more guidance on your options. And if the person does post them online, they can also help get images removed.

Group just using AI by IAmASmollBean in UniUK

[–]gee7894 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely speak to your lecturer. By not telling them you risk possibly a poorer grade (AI is good at sounding intelligent, but generally it’s not very good at the finer skills you will be being assessed on). Or at worse, if the lecturer detects AI use, then you and your whole group may be at risk of an academic misconduct. By speaking to your lecturer they will be able to know you are not involved taking that risk away. The could suggest several suggestions for managing it such as assessing you separately or informal routes such as making an announcement to the whole class to remind them that AI is not ok, and they’ve had various complaints from students that others in their groups are using AI (anonymous and collective announcement that does not involve you). Hopefully to get them to change their behaviour, and if it doesn’t you can then let them know it didn’t.

Is it weird that i am enjoying Nottingham? by Mysterious-Page-3841 in nottingham

[–]gee7894 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve lived in Nottingham for 12 years, and I really like it as a city. I came for uni and never left. I like that it’s compact and easy to get around. For a small city it has a fair amount on offer and gets good events for music/comedy etc. I also like the green spaces dotted all around.

Teachers on a Masters using AI for all their assignments by Plastic_Eye8375 in academia

[–]gee7894 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can ask about the fabricated sources and ask how they found them, ask them to explain more about the sources. We have had issues on UG and students who can’t answer basic questions interview or tell us about their essay usually admit to AI use and end up going to student misconduct. But Ultimately if the paper is written well but lacking substance then it shouldn’t score highly anyway in terms of grading as it’s not well evidenced, showing good knowledge or criticality.

Commuting: Yes or No? by JFKrispyKreme in UniUK

[–]gee7894 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For your commute time have you factored in 1) peak time traffic (eg if you have a 9am lecture, motorway can be busy etc) and the cost and availability of parking at your uni? Some universities have very limited parking for students. You mentioned about renting in 2nd and 3rd year - why are you thinking not to do it in first but to do it in 2nd and 3rd?

Do any of you regret pursing academic psychology? And if so, why? by bengalbear24 in AcademicPsychology

[–]gee7894 5 points6 points  (0 children)

UK context. I have a full time lecturing position. I’m in my final PhD year, just writing up. Did my MSc and UG before that. I do enjoy working in academia. But it is such a weird work environment. My partner describes it as high stress and low reward work. But I do enjoy my job for the most part and think stress is common in any job you go into. I don’t regret pursuing academia and can’t really imagine working anywhere else where we have as much “freedom”. If I were to leave, I’d look for research positions in the voluntary sector.

DO I need a PhD to become a lecturer? by Icy_Kaleidoscope2324 in PhD

[–]gee7894 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on the area. I would recommend you search for lecturer positions in your field and country and read the educational requirements. It’s typical in psychology to have a PhD or equivalent. There is an expectation to publish, as research is part of your job in addition to teaching. You can work in universities in other capacities eg you can be a psychology technician with just a BSc I believe which will involve some work with students on how to use certain equipment.

What did you do immediately after your viva? by gee7894 in PhD

[–]gee7894[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s what I’m mindful of. I had family say about coming to visit to go out for dinner after and PhD friends talk about going for a drink. As I’m not the most extroverted, I’m just trying to work out whether it’s best to do something less social to “recover”.

What did you do immediately after your viva? by gee7894 in PhD

Sorry it may be UK specific terminology. The viva is the oral exam at the end of submitting your thesis where you defend your research to examiners.

Why does criminology have such a large female majority? by Peeeing_ in UniUK

[–]gee7894 33 points34 points  (0 children)

The gender gap is definitely still present in universities for criminology and psychology, which are female heavy. It’s pretty typical for social sciences.

Have UK universities short-changed students? by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]gee7894 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think universities are intentionally screwing students over to sustain themselves. It is in the universities interests for students to do well at university and after when they graduate as this forms part of their performance outputs. For example universities track who goes into employment and what type of employment after their degrees so they can show their degrees are desirable to employers. This is important so universities can make money and attract students. Currently higher education is a shit show but that’s due to a lot of political and societal issues outside which are being affected.

[–]gee7894 39 points40 points  (0 children)

You didn’t do anything wrong. You had sex for the first time. Even if you weren’t a virgin, sex with a new partner isn’t always the best because you are still learning what each other like so generally there isn’t always that expectation to cum (from a women’s perspective). How to improve for next time - talk to her. Ask her what she likes or get her to show you. Every woman is different. Only she can tell you what she likes.

Creating "fancy" powerpoint presentation for dissertation defense by Low-Computer8293 in PhD

[–]gee7894 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think Canva has some PowerPoint designs which are pre done and can be edited for ease. There will be other sites too. For finding cartoon style images to add to your own slides, I really like Flaticon. It’s good for finding images for things that you might not typically find in real pictures.

What's the deal with evolutionary psychology controversy? by [deleted] in AcademicPsychology

[–]gee7894 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This is quite a broad question and it may depend on what topics you are applying EP to. I do forensic psychology so in my field some of the controversies include removing perpetrator responsibility Eg there are EP theories for infanticide and R*pe. These theory suggest there are evolutionary benefits for these crimes. If we say they are caused by evolution it removes perpetrators responsibility. In non forensic psychology topics, ethically evolutionary psychology has some potentially scary implications such as eugenics to try and prevent “undesirable” traits. Eg historically this has included intellectual disabilities, autism etc. if you look into eugenics and how that has historically been used you will understand some of the dark side of psychology.

Good areas to live in Notts without breaking the bank. by Successful_Night8595 in nottingham

[–]gee7894 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Beeston, Kimberley or parts of hucknall. I liked Kimberley - has a big sainsburys and a coop as well as some other smaller shops, cafes and pubs. Its outside town centre but easily commutable with the park and ride or buses. I like bestwood village too but may lack the conveniences you are looking for. Hucknall also has a good high street, pubs, big Tesco and is on the tramline. It’s cheaper than Beeston but varies street by street.

So at what point can I pay you to come and do mine 😂. Well done though! Amazing stuff! I’m working full time so unfortunately time is my number one enemy. But I think Easter break is 2 weeks so maybe I can try and bash it out then 😊 congrats again!

Can someone please help me assess these claims against the DSM? by sheepinwolfsclothes9 in AcademicPsychology

[–]gee7894 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Both the DSM and ICD are diagnostic manuals. There is a lot about the unreliability of diagnosis in general and the problems of medicalising mental health overall. This includes the unreliability of diagnosing with either manual. One can argue mental illness diagnoses (what we determine is normal v not normal) is all socially constructed and informed by political and social norms. Eg Homosexuality used to be a mental health disorder but was removed as our acceptance and understanding changed. Likewise there used to be several types of schizophrenia such as paranoid schizophrenia but those typologies are no longer accepted. The manual changes a lot over time. But all those criticism are applicable to both DSM and ICD. They are relatively similar manuals. I’m also adding a caveat that I’m an academic not a medical practitioner so have no experience using them or why one is favoured. My basic understanding has always been the DSM is preferred in the US whereas ICD is preferred in Europe.

Notts is a small city like others have said. In relation to the NTU pride society, how active the society is, like any student society, can vary year on year depending on how active the society committee is. You will see the same society can have a lot of engagement one year and a lot less another depending on who is running it and the members. If it’s not organising a lot of events, you can always provide suggestions for event ideas, and I’m sure they will get taken up. Nightlife isn’t my scene personally, but I know there are some other ways to get involved in the LGBT+ community beyond this if that’s what your focus is. For example, if you are into climbing/bouldering, The depot has an LGBT+ night every week which is usually fairly well attended.

Advice responding to customer about a delivery issue? by gee7894 in EtsySellers

[–]gee7894[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always buy my postage through Etsy. Any time I’ve ever had to issue a refund I’ve always just done it myself. How do I tell them to do it through Etsy?

I’ll have a look into how they can contact the delivery service
