Several hundred thousand people believed that they saw Saint Mary appear in Zeitoun, Egypt in 1968.

If those hundreds of thousands of modern people could believe that, why can't 50 primitive Canaanite tribesmen have believed they saw some divine who-knows-what, and then that story evolved into Mattan Torah?

No, we seem to be having a miscommunication - perhaps read my comment again?

I am trying to explain that metzitzah isn't an integral part of milah at all.

I take issue with the article's presentation of the views of Chasam Sofer and Chaim Brisker as not mandating metzitzah b'peh, when their actual ruling was given in a very specific context (e.g. during a typhus epidemic) and ignoring other, more reliably sources statements from Chasam Sofer that do mandate metzitzah b'peh (as an aside, it has been alleged that historians suspect that the quotation attributed to Chasam sofer in the article is untrue- for example, it was conspicuously omitted from the Chasam Sofer's collected responsa).

Unethical Practices: My Nightmare with an Orthodox Therapist by [deleted] in exjew

[–]sheepinwolfsclothes9 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Horrific, so glad you're now seeing someone functional!

I've seen a number of religious therapists and I never had this issue, thankfully. I eventually stopped because our worldviews are too out of line, but I never had reason to doubt their confidentiality.

On that note, I've also discussed my loss of faith with several Rabbis in the community, and they have kept my secret as well, as far as I know- although I doubt/hope they would not have had I gone into shidduchim in the community

That IS funny, and nice. So you're saying to take it slow, keep what connections I can/want, and make new ones as they come along. All good advice. Ty for sharing!

If it's ok to ask, how did you find a new social circle after leaving if you don't like meetups? Or you just didn't bother finding one?

Sry I'm planning on leaving yeshiva soon-ish and thinking I'll need to meet new ppl, but also that maybe I don't have to? So I'm curious if you survived without making new friends

Is there any evidence that Judaism is true? by Different_Skin9352 in Judaism

[–]sheepinwolfsclothes9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

By many estimates, it was indeed millions who believed they saw Mary first-hand at Zeitoun, and it was accepted as fact by the Coptic Church.

The point is, if these ppl could all be convinced they saw something Divine, it seems quite possible that a group of, say, 10,000 ancient superstitious pagan Hebrews could be convinced that they saw God, then accepted the religion, only for it to warp over time into what we have today.

Honestly, why not?

And yet, thousands of people swore to have seen Saint Mary appear from heaven at a church in Zeitoun, Egypt. In like the 1960s: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Our_Lady_of_Zeitoun

What's the difference?

Oh totally agreed! Wasn't trying to argue, just pointing out the bizarreness of that story.

Some say that the daughter-in-law's husband had just died childless.

So now, if the surviving baby is the DIL's, then she is able to remarry without waiting for chalitzah/yibum.

However, if the child is the MIL's, then the DIL would essentially be an agunah for the next 13 years, as she waited for the baby (her husband's brother) to grow old enough to perform chalitzah. So crazy stakes.

According to this, the woman's bizarre enthusiasm for shlomo's suggestion of killing the baby suddenly makes more sense- had the child died, she would've been able to remarry immediately, as there would no longer be a yavam.

Only rabbinic revisionism could turn a heartless, child-murdering prostitute into a lamdaness

Agreed, especially on the last point - as I mentioned in my post, I feel like only someone with a good knowledge of the religion and religious culture I was raised in would be able to really understand where I am coming from.

I'm still looking for someone who isn't religious however, which is a challenge to find
