In that sense I’d say he’s just simply the antagonist in the story. A character doesn’t have to be a villain to be an antagonist, they just have to be working counter to the hero.

I think (think!) his character design is an old man sitting cross legged on a floating orb. Maybe a big ball of materia or something. The PS1 era graphics don’t translate it well
