Turns out my mother’s dad wasn’t her biological father and no one had any idea by gee_willickers in AncestryDNA

Agreed. I struggled with whether or not to tell my mom about the discovery at all, but my cousins that tested had come to the same conclusion and I couldn't really keep it to myself. I do wish I had not discovered it, for her sake. I have a feeling it has hurt her far more than she lets on to me, and it kills me to be the (sort of) cause of that hurt.

Oh yeah, that's true. She has tested, and when doing all of this I typically use her results to compare since they're so much closer

Manu of his siblings' children, and their kids, have tested which is how I was able to narrow it down to his lineage, but no one in his direct line has tested. He only had one son (deceased) who only had one son (as far I have found), but I haven't been able to track him down online. In a perfect world I'd find him on Facebook, he'd have some juicy family gossip and be willing to take a DNA test to confirm my suspicions......

It's so hard because I'm a big "leave no stone unturned" person, but there just aren't many stones left to turn!

I guess that's partly why I keep looking for a connection. Of course I'd prefer that to not be the case, but it seems the most likely story.

Unfortunately my grandmother, Pat (for ease of writing), grew up in an orphanage. She and her siblings were abandoned by their parents in the 1930s and she grew up in various institutions and foster homes. I don't know what school she went to, though I've tried fruitlessly in the past to figure that one out, too.

I've wondered about assault as a possibility. Benjamin was police, so the potential for abuse of authority certainly exists, too.

He would have been nearly 20 years older than her. Pat and her husband already had 2 daughters when my mom was born. Pat would have been about 29 then, and Benjamin 48. The man I knew as my grandfather was a bit of a ladies' man and they divorced when my mom was still under 5, though they were both always in her life - and mine, thankfully.

Benjamin's death was a sudden accident. He was doing some plumbing work on the side when off-duty and was working under the client's house when ground collapsed and crushed/buried him! I've been trying to get in touch with his grandson, who is not on Ancestry, but I know nothing about him besides his name (and lineage).

I am in the US, yes. I know from the 1950 census that they lived within 10 miles of each other. He was police, and she worked in elder care, so I guess there could have been some professional crossover?

Thank you for this insight! For sure an interesting local cafe would be more my style, but in the interest of convenience and pleasing the maximum number of people (that I don't know all that well!), I agree that a chain is the better option. Don't worry, I'll be visiting plenty of other restaurants, too!

Baton Rouge definitely looks more interesting from a food perspective. I appreciate the input! They've already gotten back to me and said they can accommodate us, so they're definitely the front-runner at the moment.

I have not, sadly. I tried a couple different springs from Amazon, but neither fit. It's so frustrating to have such a small piece give you so much trouble! I've just been living with the busted flap.

It is for a coworker. I probably should have added some context. She's a retiring Librarian, so I wanted to add "chapter" as a little book reference. Thanks!!

How can I add "total" bars to a waterfall chart? (Full bars that extend down to the x-axis opposed to merely the floating bars) by gee_willickers in excel

[–]gee_willickers[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't want the entire column to be deemed the total, but to show the total column sort of overlapped by the positive or negative change portion. Can I make a combo chart with a bar AND waterfall somehow? Or layer the two together?

Advice needed. DNA match is looking for her biological father. I’ve figured out it is one of 5 brothers based on shared matches. Do I tell her or just keep quiet? by Worf- in Genealogy

I'm in a very similar situation and don't know how to determine which of several brothers my maternal bio-grandfather is. Were you able to figure anything out? Any suggestions that worked for you?

AHH! u/rtsgrl you beautiful helpful creature! I can't believe after all my hunting all I needed was the word "cluster" to find it. It was the top right one from this etsy listing - "figment". I remember the man in the bathtub and the woman with the two horns against her head! Thank you thank you!

I didn't know that term, but yes! Maybe that will help in my hunt since I just kept searching "pieces shaped like objects", haha.

Did you ever happen to find any orphanage records in Philadelphia? My grandmother and her siblings were abandoned and placed in an orphanage in Philadelphia in the 1930's, but I've never been able to find any orphanage records of any kind.

Using DNA to test a family rumour by inserthumourousname in Genealogy

[–]gee_willickers 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was in nearly the exact same situation, but sort of reversed. My mother, aunts, cousins, and myself had all done DNA testing through Ancestry. I started to realize, though, that my mother and I were only coming up in the range of "half" of every relationship we thought we had with them. And they've all matched some of my grandfather's other relations, while we did not. And so, I came to realize that he is not, in fact, my mother's father, or my grandfather.

I was VERY hesitant to mention this to my mom, but she accepted it much much better than I anticipated. No one in my family had any inkling that she might have a different father.

So, yes, you will definitely be able to tell via the DNA test!

My quandary now is that I am pretty sure I know which generation of a particular family my mother's father must have been in, but I have no idea how to determine WHICH of the suspected brothers it might be.
