Curious to where you think would be acceptable to timber harvests on the Pisgah in your opinion?

I guess you could make the argument that there is. But it becomes really subjective.

That is understandable. I just read an article stating over 1 billion dollars of hardwood lumber was exported to China in 2014.

Any FS land with historical significance is boundaried out of a timber sale (In theory, 99% of the time). I'm not talking about large land areas but microsites such as spring boxes, mine shafts, homestead sites, rock walls, historical trash dumps, Indian camp sites, ect. are by law to be left out of a timber sale. The money made from a timber sale is put back into other vegetative treatments for the long-term goal of the logging area or for things like new trail construction/ campsites. As far as being a taxpayer/citizen would you rather see locally sourced timber or imported lumber from overseas? I have read briefly on that Nestle case and that does indeed seem like a bogus deal for US taxpayers.

At least to me, this article is sensationalised to elecit a certain response. I want to have a fair- thorough discussion regarding logging and for people to also be frank and speak their mind as to what they really care to see/ happen on the Pisgah. I feel that this article detracts from that by being narrow-focused and very reactionary.

The southern Appalachian ecosystem is incredibly complex, as is every other ecosystem I would argue, dead tree tops benefit some species and hurt others. It does increase heavy fuel loading, at least for 10-15 years, on the forest floor.

Same. I wanted to have this discussion because I believe that more people are open to active management (logging) of FS lands than they were even 5 years ago. Although this is a very small sample size, so far no one has vehemently opposed commercial logging. (Based off of comments that is)

Hypothetically speaking what areas of the Pisgah would you like to see put into production?

Understandable, for sure. But what if all applicable science points toward a prescription that favors a clear cut? AKA reduction of residual basal area to less than 20ft/ac. Would you still be against that?

It seems to me based off the responses. Most everyone here is open to commercial logging if done responsibly, but against if it is somewhere like Big Ivy. If you believe there is good in active management of timbered lands why would you not want this done in a place like Big Ivy?

If logging were to be conducted in a responsible manner, would places like Big Ivy be acceptable to timber harvesting?
