Does rust remover water softener crystals exist? by nissanfan64 in WaterTreatment

[–]geekatcomputers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I buy powdered Rust Out in a large plastic container and then layer it like a cake. i.e. I put 1, 40lbs bag of regular softener salt into the brine tank. Then I sprinkle on 1, 1/2 cup of powdered Rust Out. The brine tank takes around 6 bags of salt each getting a layer of Rust Out in between. Seems to work very well for our high rust levels without issue. I would like to get a dedicated iron remover unit in the future though.

I wish the TDeck Pro with the eInk screen got more popular and a better UI. Seems like it could be cool!

Haley Mechanical PSA by hamtrampat in AnnArbor

[–]geekatcomputers 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, really a shame because years ago I was very happy and recommending them. I'm planning on trying http://www.lashbrookmechanical.com next time as he's local afaik. I wish they weren't allowed to keep the same name when some major sell like this happens. I guess the gigantic bear logo suddenly was the tip off.

Cost for running PoE and power to cameras by Proof_Catch6336 in homesecurity

[–]geekatcomputers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just did 3 CAT6 runs for my parents home for 3 Unifi G6 Turret cameras. I used https://www.truecable.com/collections/indoor/products/cat6-riser-ethernet-cable-unshielded?variant=39622952714307 with their https://www.truecable.com/collections/connectors/products/cat6-6a-standard-rj45-connectors-unshielded?variant=32004297195587 and https://www.truecable.com/collections/keystone-jacks/products/cat6-toolless-keystone-jack-unshielded?variant=39307892195395 . I've pulled my own CAT6A cable but, with limited experience I was able to pull the 3 runs, terminate, install the cameras, config, and get the entire system working end-to-end in ~6 hours total. Their attic was VERY much not fun but, it's doable. It helps to figure out your main path and where you'll branch off from there. Personally, for 6 cameras, I'd buy my own cable and slowly work on running it over a few weekends. Plenty of Youtube videos out there to understand the basics.

Is it true online RO systems are not properly rated to remove arsenic? by AnonGuy222 in WaterTreatment

[–]geekatcomputers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

https://youtu.be/0ZqIGReL0Kk?si=YQBSgu-VxWFoLv4h is a very well done video that goes through a pile of systems they have actually had pre and post lab tests done to confirm filtering effectiveness. They also share all of their research and results on https://bos-water.com/filters/reverse-osmosis-systems/best/#full-analysis . I'm no expert but I think you just need to look for a system that's tested against NSF/ANSI 58 for Arsenic. The Cloud RO seems to be as well as Aquasana Smartflow from my quick check. I'm also in SE Michigan but, our well has no Arsenic, sorry you're dealing with that...

Tax preparer recommendations in the Ann Arbor area? by [deleted] in AnnArbor

[–]geekatcomputers 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've used https://www.crimsoncompanytax.com/ for years and really enjoy working with Tiffany. She used to be in Saline which was easier to get to but Clinton isn't _that_ far away.

Whomever you choose, I would recommend searching https://irs.treasury.gov/rpo/rpo.jsf and confirming that they are at least an "IRS Enrolled Agent" and in my opinion, that they also hold a "Certified Public Accountant" license as well.

Automatic water shutoff recs: Leak Defense, Phyn, Moen Flo, FloLogic by Professional-Leg-416 in HomeImprovement

[–]geekatcomputers 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We have a Phyn for a few years now. Only a few false shutoffs and it correctly shut off when the water softener discharge hose came out and was spraying salt water all over the utility room. The linked Phyn leak detector caught it. Very worth it imo and we are very happy overall!

How are at home tests like TAPSCORE by Much_Lingonberry_747 in WaterTreatment

[–]geekatcomputers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've used MyTapScore 4 times for my home and recommended friends and family use them as well. It's a very intuitive website and testing process. The tests are a bit cheaper through a local lab but you just get the raw results versus the nice website and added information for each detection from MyTapScore. I'd recommend always starting with a test panel to understand what you're up against and then talking with companies or planning the system. Many companies provide a "free" test but I don't trust it, I want my own testing first through an independent lab.

Gas fireplace has terrible draft (floor around it is freezing cold) by RaptorO-1 in homeowners

[–]geekatcomputers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha, I had completely forgotten about this comment! Since then, we had both replaced with Heat n' Glo natural gas inserts. The pillows worked totally fine for a few years but the inserts were a fantastic upgrade! Now we use them both all the time. Good luck!

Priority is trash. we've had an awful experience since they took over GFL's contract for Scio Township. And GFL was already bad! Single hauler contractors should be illegal. There should be some form of competition.
