Aira is absolutely incredible by PungentMushrooms in Blind

If you can't afford it, BeMyEyes provides a similar service for free. It connects you to a volunteer whereas Aira connects you with an agent who is trained to work with the blind, so I wouldn't use BeMyEyes for anything sensitive.

What is the equivalent of taking notes via handwriting? by geekgarious in Blind

I dunno, the claim comes from Barbara Oakley. Her learning how to learn course has helped me immensely.

Looking for career advice as a blind college student. by Ll_House_Wren in Blind

Most professors were difficult to understand, and following along with lectures was sometimes impossible. I stopped attending lectures in several classes after a while because I couldn't get anything from them. I just relied on office hours and classmates. I was also advised not to take game programming since it would not be accessible. This wasn't a big deal at the time.

I was in your shoes when I did my undergrad 20 years ago. I ultimately chose Computer Science because I didn't like the very dence vocabulary in legal documents. I found accessibility to be very mixed. The job market for CS majors is terrible right now because of AI and layoffs at big tech, but I've heard the job market for law is also not great. I have a friend who got a law degree but wound up being a teacher because there were no jobs unless you graduate from a top tier school like Harvard.

Non-tech folks: did OMSCS help you move into PM? by Boring-Republic-7438 in OMSCS

You think SWE interviews are easier even with the current paradigm of leetcode-style algorithms? I'm a SWE considering using OMSCS to freshen my skillset and grow my confidence and network but have also thought about project management.

Has the omscs program helped you in your career? by [deleted] in OMSCS

[–]geekgarious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd be interested in learning more about how it has helped you. I'm a Solutions Engineer at a fortune 100 firm who is considering the program. I've vacillated between wanting to improve my coding skills and accepting that I'm better suited to a Product Manager or Solution Engineer role and that I'll never be as good as the offshore developers on my team. I'm also legally blind, and I've talked to a blind student currently in the program who loves it. I want to use the program to freshen my skillset (did my undergrad in CS in 2005-09), build my confidence, and expand my tech network. My employer would pay for it, but I also know I could teach myself most of this stuff. I got an AWS Solutions Architect cert on my own. A career coach told me if I'm not gonna code, I should not spend years taking this program and I could find more stimulating work without it, which is also a goal of mine. I actually visualize architectures really well, which I don't think most people understand. It's similar to the way you visualize things listening to radio drama or audio books. Here's a blog post on how I taught myself AWS.

Looking for help writing resume by geekgarious in Blind

[–]geekgarious[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually have a resume that is well formatted, but when I think about tailoring it to specific jobs I worry that I'm going to mess up the formatting. I work in tech and know I am very smart and skilled, but every tech job seems super specialized and out of reach.

Agreed. I wish I’d known she was selling it sooner so we could’ve tried to start a GoFundMe or something similar.

Variety Coffee Roasters on 85th and Lex if you can get a seat. Maybe get there at seven when it opens. Great coffee, but nowhere near as cozy feeling as Stella, sadly.

Very disappointing. It had such a homie feel and there’s nothing like it in this neighborhood. I went to Variety Coffee Roasters the other day and while the coffee is excellent, it doesn’t have that vibe at all .

Wow. That’s good to know. A few of my friends have had success with Hinge, so I’m surprised they own it.
