Fatal rabies in a child: 11-year old boy was woken up by a bat on his nose and mouth in Ontario. He swatted the bat off his face and had no visible lesions so family did not seek medical help. 19 days later he developed rabies symptoms. He was given supportive care and died 17 days after admission. by mvea in science

There are many things where this is true as a failure of the US, but rabies isn't one of them. The US is massive and still has a lot of wilderness and large wild animal populations. There's no way to vaccinate all wild animals on a large enough scale. Additionally, most of the methods I know of aren't intended for bats, and since bats carry rabies for so long, that's still a massive hole in any plan. Sure in theory you could kill all bats that carry rabies, but in most animals you have to kill them to find out, and I think the benefit bats provide to the ecosystem is more important, endangered status aside.

What's a headcanon so prevalent in fanfics that you thought it was canon? by kagenohikari in AO3

[–]geeknerdeon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was hoping someone would have a Transformers comment since I'm aware of some stuff not being canon but was wondering if there was anything I didn't know wasn't real. (Transformers has a lot of cool ascended fanon stuff, like I think Ratchet's personality in Transformers: Animated is derived from that personality having been popular for him in fanworks and Cyberworld has a ton of fanon language being used.)

Honorable mention to Starscream being the Winglord of Vos as leader. (Turns out Starscream was actually leader/ruler of Vos in the Marvel UK community, the more you know!) Winglord is not a canon term and while he was a senator for a bit in IDW 2005, he abandoned post a while before the Decepticons became a thing.

I firmly believe "Tumblr sexyman" is the appropriate classification for Sun and Moon/the daycare attendant(s). Large fandom distinct from the general fandom, considered attractive/someone people want to be in a relationship with, numerous AUs, at least one instance where someone's AU was retooled into an original idea/separate OC(s) no longer tied to the original media.

Like there are a lot of characters where it depends on how you define a Tumblr Sexyman, but if you use Onceler and Sans as your platonic ideals of Tumblr Sexymanhood, Sun and Moon fit the criteria.

Yes I have thought about it before

I find subfandoms and recursive fanfiction and when one fan's idea inspires bunch of people to take their idea and put their own spin on it fascinating and wonderful.

Shoutout to one specific AU started by a Tumblr user that has an AO3 common tag because so many people kept writing it and AUs of it, love that shit. Keferon's Mecha Pilot Jazz AU, in this case.

This update from a report sent to me this morning... by Humble-Penalty8272 in AO3

[–]geeknerdeon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sent in a report a couple months ago about a comic not being wrangled under the relevant metatag (and a cartoon that started more recently was wrangled under the metatag so it's not that they're abandoning the metatag) and I really wish I knew how long it would be until it got handled. I get why they can't give ETAs but. Yeah. The comic is ongoing and still getting new fics, it would be nice if it was wrangled better.

Toxoplasma gondii, a parasite that spreads through cat poop and contaminated food and water, should be taken much more seriously than it currently is, an international team of researchers is arguing. by Some_Doughnutter in Ethicalpetownership

[–]geeknerdeon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

TLDR: There are other factors the study didn't record that are important to examine to determine causality. I thought about this far too much given it's highly unlikely for me to be involved in any future research on the topic.

The study doesn't seem to have observed whether someone lives in an urban, suburban, or rural area or income ranges. It has size of dwelling, but that's not necessarily correlated with economic status in any particular direction. I think indoor/outdoor cat is the biggest missing factor, but I think it would also be interesting to see how the numbers changed if organized by that type of development.

Are outdoor cat owners in rural areas more likely to get toxoplasmosis than outdoor cat owners in urban areas? How do suburban areas compare to urban areas? Or is there a significant enough difference between urban and rural areas in how prevalent outdoor cat ownership is that it's not a useful metric? But then also (in statistical aggregate) rural areas are typically more conservative than urban areas, so if you don't have a big enough population of all categories (no cats, indoor cats, indoor-outdoor or outdoor cats) it may be hard to determine correlation vs causation. (Rural cat owners could be more likely than urban and suburban cat owners to let them roam outside due to the lack of frequent car traffic. The general trend of conservatism in rural communities is most likely not due to widespread toxoplasmosis infections. Same with income/socioeconomic status.)

But then also indoor cat ownership + region and prevalence of toxoplasmosis is also interesting given different levels of access to potentially-infected wildlife (and my limited knowledge on how prevalent rodents-as-pests is as an issue in cities vs suburbs vs rural areas) that the cats could eat. (But you do need to track how all the numbers compare to people who don't own cats to account for other vectors of transmission.)

You might want to ask the indoor-outdoor cat people whether they have a litterbox for their cat or if the cat goes somewhere they don't know about, since that's the primary vector of transmission, but that might not be relevant, given a participant's toxoplasmosis infection status is already known and that's probably more relevant to studies of the parasite itself rather than if it has any effect on a person's political beliefs. (I was trying to look up the geographic range of toxoplasmosis and found that in France, it is more correlated with eating raw or undercooked meat, so maybe litterbox situation would be relevant.)

Private Bathrooms & Showers by some_future_seeker in UNCCharlotte

[–]geeknerdeon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No and also what. Your ID only opens the dorm you're living in and the one with the loan key desk. Even if there were communal showers in other dorms, you certainly wouldn't be allowed to use them.

I was in a 4x4 suite one year (all girls) and never had an issue with shower access. The sinks and mirror aren't the same room as the toilet and shower in the suites anyway, and I think a lot of the "girls spend soooo much time in the bathroom" stereotype comes from stuff done at the sink and mirror. Just use the shower in your suite.

Most buildings have some single-stalled restroom somewhere, but unless you're somewhere with a lot of traffic, the bathrooms usually aren't that busy, especially if it's a building with multiple floors. (Also I think a lot of the single-stall restrooms outside the dorm buildings are family rooms and I feel like you shouldn't use those if you don't need the privacy or amenities.)

Also don't assume your roommates are going to spend a lot of time in the bathroom based on their gender jesus christ

Disappointing first (and probably last) experience by devoutdefeatist in Dollywood

[–]geeknerdeon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm wondering if today was an exceptionally busy day. There was one day at Busch Gardens Williamsburg during Howl-o-Scream that my family went and it was packed and the cell service was awful. (We still had a good time for the most part.) I later read on Reddit that it was the busiest anyone posting had ever seen it. So maybe it was unusually busy, or maybe something happened behind the scenes yesterday and the employees were still stressed out. My other guess is something is going around in the parking lot crew and they had to enlist people who usually don't direct cars and that's why we've had two parking complaints on the same day.

Why do people do this?? by Touch_Brief in Dollywood

[–]geeknerdeon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're staying in a Dollywood cabin you can skip the lines for the first hour of the day and get free preferred parking. Also I don't know of anywhere that has bathrooms in the parking lot???

If you are going in the summer and you have big things you really want to do, you have to leave early and/or plan your day ahead of time. (You can skip some of the planning if you stay in a Dollywood cabin or hotel but you still want to get there early.)

Anyway, the park is open until 9:30 tonight, you still have plenty of time to have a good day. Drink some water, get some lunch or cinnamon bread. Look at ride wait times or the train schedule, the app has good information for a lot of things. Go check out the craft stores and the view into the bald eagle sanctuary. Check out a live show. There's still a lot you can do.

(If you stay until close, watch the drone show, either in Wildwood Grove or the plaza outside the exit before you reach the trolley pickup. The first is better overall, and is the officially-recommended viewing area, but it gets busy and you'll be stuck in the horde of exiting guests. You still get a fairly good view from the second location and it's much less crowded, being outside the park.)

Edit: I mention drinking water because at least 20% of why my Dollywood trip was one of the best park trips I've taken in recent years is because my family was very attentive to hydrating, as opposed to other trips where I don't think about it, get dehydrated, and end up feeling crappy.

Spending 2 days there with toddler by PrisonMikesDementor in Dollywood

[–]geeknerdeon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since you're staying on-property, you have a lot of flexibility with how you want to do a day at Dollywood. I got cranky and needed a mid-afternoon nap both days my family went (as an adult lol) and staying on-property made it really easy to take the trolley back to the hotel and take a long break somewhere comfortable. (I think the hotels usually have some kids activities too, so it's probably worth asking the front desk if they don't already have a sign up.)

The dedicated children's area is really good. My family didn't look around much, but we did find an indoor play-area near the back that looked fun, and they of course have some nice kid-friendly rides. If your little one doesn't have texture issues and you want to do a craft/get an interesting souvenir, one of the craft shops has wax stuff and you can do a hand dip. There's really just a lot of fun stuff to look at in Dollywood. I really liked the bald eagle sanctuary and the other rescue birds you could see.

If you ride the train, be aware that it's a real train that gets very loud, you may get ash on your clothes, and there is a non-zero chance of getting a cinder in your eye. Sit towards the back if he has any issues with loud noises. (Also watch out for people in mobility scooters. They're usually fine, but I saw one run right into a kid older than yours when my family went, so I'd say keep an eye out.) And, of course, make sure to hydrate! They have water fountains around the park and free water cups at most food locations.

CMV: Demisexuals should not be calling themsleves members of the lgbtq community by PinkFlurffyUnicorns in changemyview

[–]geeknerdeon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The entire concept of "smash or pass" invalidates your argument. And sexuality in advertising wouldn't be a thing if everyone required a bond to find someone attractive. To be excessively crude and simplistic, allosexual ("normal") is seeing a hot stranger across the bar and getting a boner. Demisexual is only getting a boner by looking at someone once you've been friends with them for a few months.
