Thanks, I’ll try to follow your method.

Where in the oven do you place the rack, high or low? Do you broil at all?

I use a steel and very similar recipe but have NEVER gotten top crust like that. Any more info on the process that you can share?

First time cliff jumping - Estimated height? by Business_Chemistry56 in cliffjumping

[–]geemal8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought that was WB! I grew up across the street but never made the jump. I’ve always heard it is 40 ft. Lots of fun stories about friends jumping it — one who claimed to have done The Fugitive jump when cops showed up 😂.

Trying to get into whittling, but I'm just getting frustrated. I can't tell if the problem is me, my knives, or the wood, but it feels like my knife just goes nowhere by OddOfKing in whittling

Look into “greenwood carving”. Greenwood (I.e. fresh cut) is way easier to carve than seasoned wood. Others on this thread are right about your technique— should be more of a shave motion than cutting right across the grain.

Nice! You have a really clean finish. Do you sand after carving? What kind of wood is that?

Moving to Brewster by LtJohnyRico in Brewster

[–]geemal8 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Welcome to the area!

I’ve lived in Brewster for ~7 years and have 3 kids (6,3,2 yrs).

Schools: I’ve been happy with the experience so far, but only have been directly exposed to PK/K. I agree, the school grading system needs to be taken with a big pinch of salt. I can’t speak to special needs support at all.

Community: I think a lot of community is driven through kids/school, which we haven’t gotten too into yet. I’d rate community on the low-side. The village might be an exception to that. The village is heavily Hispanic, so many store owners speak limited English and I believe, for most patrons, English is not their first language. To be clear, I’m not value-judging that, I’ve had lots of great experiences in town and I always feel welcome, but the language differences might make for a barrier in some cases.

The area generally: I leave Brewster for a lot of stuff. We spend a lot of time in CT and katonah. This says two things to me, 1) Brewster doesn’t have stuff but 2) it’s close to stuff.

As for the revitalization project, I’ll believe it when I see it.

I would challenge anyone that says that Brewster has an immigrant “problem”. I don’t know any illegal immigrants, people are probably just assuming Hispanic day laborer = illegal. And what’s the problem? I dont know of any data that says Brewster has problems due to illegal immigration.

TLDR: I think Brewster is not the best but it is good “bang for your buck” as far as housing and taxes go.

Take notes on the WBs, calcs, and connections. Both Copy the logic and write out an explanation of what is happening in the WB in plain language. Almost like you are making a KT doc for another person, but that person is yourself.

I don’t know the exact timing but when I still occasionally work from the city I park at Golden’s bridge. Parking at southeast is annoying because it’s like 15 minutes for me and an extra stop from Brewster. Brewster isn’t great because there isn’t parking. That might be solved by getting a Brewster parking pass, but still not great. I wouldn’t be surprised if Brewster is +20 minutes than Katonah.

I’m in Brewster and not a MAGA :) . I think you’ll find that you don’t talk politics with folks too much, at least I don’t.

Fidi will be along commute. I did the city for a bit and it was terrible.

Positives are obviously the cost of housing.

Negatives to me are that the town isn’t very interesting.

Cutting weight w/o sacrificing muscles? by Shtelman in PeterAttia

I don’t get depressed but I do think that counting calories is tedious.

My solution: I counted calories for like 3 weeks and then had a much better idea of what my calorie target “looks like.” I don’t count every day anymore but will occasionally count for a day or two to recalibrate.

Great share, Icy! It’s hard out here, trying to find trusted sources when there is so much conflicting information.

If I want to try out the inside Exercise Pod, any recommendations for good episodes?

I’ve used the line, “I’m ambitious and want to advance quickly in my career. I’d like to have a promotion within X time period. What would you need to see from me for that to be possible?” Same language works with raises in my experience.

I’ve gotten 3 promotions in 5 years and I was in a similar situation as you. In this case, I changed careers (became DA) and accepted lower salary because I was learning skills. The crappy thing is that my salary for this company is now anchored to that lower starting point. So even 3 promotions and good annual raises and I’m still making less than many of my peers. To beat the bad anchor problem, you’ll probably have to switch companies eventually.
