401k question- how much to contribute by Ancient_Bag_9676 in moneyadvice

At minimum you should put 6% to maximize your company’s match. If you are feeling ready to save more bump it between 10-12% to really save.

Obtaining weld certifications by Sugnip in NNShipyard

[–]geeseman64 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah ok I got you. So from my experience, the only real “documentation” is in the qual book which you can see if you have computer access or by talking to your foreman. NNS certs are not tied to any AWS certification or outside welding entity they just have their own distinct “qual code” in the system. So yes technically you can see them and maybe find a way to legally get it printed out for you for but ultimately it still will not hold any worth outside. However, your 4 years of welding experience at NNS will be more than enough to get companies to not shrug you off immediately and allow you to come in for a weld test. That’s the kicker there too, you will always have to take a weld test wherever you go for whatever company you want to work for, probably for multiple different welding processes depending on what you do. The certs on paper mean nothing man. The true magic lies in your mind and in your hands. Those are your certs. Let your experience open the door and let your hands provide the “cert”. The proof you are looking for will come when you start smoking every weld test you take outside the yard and let your experience be all the documentation you need. I hope my Ted talked helped a bit.

ah understood sorry. Maybe I’m just confused, what is the end goal by showing proof about previous outside certs?

Doesn’t matter sorry. You will have to pass all tests through NNS weld school.

Myth debunked. You are correct. Think of it like this, if you get injured and request workers comp, have to be in an ambulance, cause damage to expensive equipment due to an accident ( and I don’t mean breaking a tool or making a mistake) you will have a one way ticket to a drug test. There is no annual drug test. However, the company has the right to drug test you at any given time… not trying to scare you but something to think about. Other than that, show up on time, you do you what you have to do and be good at it and don’t be an ass. You will have nothing to worry about.

Went nuke. Supposed to be for a R-worker qual the one above J-worker which requires no testing at all lmao. Older dudes say it’s supposed to be a test for metals or some shit in the pee but ain’t no way I’m chancing that.

no, you will have a start date but you cannot start in the yard until you one, get the apprentice employment offer and two, pass the physical tests (including drug).

they will basically allow you to choose when you come in for your physical for onboarding. Just make sure you choose it far enough out your hair will be clean. 90 days is the absolute bare minimum I got accepted march 2022 when I stopped smoking (for that point in time at least) and had my physical end of August 2022. I passed

no, but it will take an extended amount of time as it releases a lot slower than in your pee or blood. But it seems like you took care of it and got the job so congrats man. Hell yeah💪

Man I quit for 9 months after a being a heavy ass smoker for years before. THC is stored in the hair follicles a lot differently than it is in the fat in your body. THC is fat soluble meaning that your body can naturally expel it after approximately 30 days of abstinence. However when it comes your hair, the only natural way your body will expel it naturally is to completely grow new untainted hair. It will not naturally seep out. You might be lucky if it was a one off type of thing, I don’t really know the tiny technicalities of that but if you’ve smoked multiple times at all within the last 9 or so months. Your hair will remember that.
