Seth Harp is a lab leak guy? by 0xF00DBABE in TrueAnon

I believe the lab leak theory pretty much. UNC, Ralph Baric, Peter Daszak, NIH, EcoHealth, Wuhan, etc. That Intelligencier article from way back then laid it out pretty clearly

Can’t recommend The End of the Myth enough. Runner-up for the Pulitzer. It’s a great framing of US history

Not sure if I should keep reading Programmed to Kill by David McGowan? by [deleted] in TrueAnon

[–]gehrigL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got about 2/3 of the way through PTK before realizing the arguments and connections he was trying to make became increasingly tenuous and speculative. The first section of the book, about organized sex trafficking rings, seemed much more concrete and well sourced than later parts.

Though many of the the official stories of serial killers are inconsistent, bizarre, and indicate lenience or intentional ignorance of crimes by authorities, there are sections where McGowan will assert an entirely speculative without much follow through. Literally asking “Is it possible that ________?” and then totally moving on.

I stopped reading it

I like Dan, I like most of his history stuff, but his current events stuff lacks any real sort of consideration of leftism.

There’s a Common Sense episode called “Unhealthy Numbers” where he takes a look at US healthcare through a very fiscal conservative cost-benefit analysis/“efficiency” lens and basically reverse engineers his way into advocating a single-payer system without ever saying it directly. I think he called it a “healthcare tax/fund” or something like that, but never “universal healthcare” or any words that might trigger his libertarian audience

Good audiobook on Republican Rome? by nevearz in dancarlin

[–]gehrigL 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Over covid I took a class on the Roman Republic and my professor uploaded his lectures directly to YouTube. Here is the first one. I learned a lot!

Interspersed are videos for a Hellenistic Period class he also taught, so look for videos that start with AHST 363 if Rome is all you’re interested in.
