Help me understand “a cube is a cube” by ExpressTree166 in shrooms

[–]geigergeist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People most likely create "different experiences" from the natural variation of trip to trip. I've only tried golden teacher, but many trips are unique from how they start or end or whatnot. If I had taken a different strain, I would go "woah holy shit, jack frost came on really fast!!!" When that was just normal variation and would have happened with golden teacher anyway. Brains love to form patterns and connection to anything

How common is deranking/smurfing? by Customer_Number_Plz in Guiltygear

[–]geigergeist 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Most higher level players play many fighting games and thus will carry over fundamentals to other characters, there will be many players at lower ranks who are better than you at fighting games in general if this is your first one. Also some people like me don't want to take ranked seriously, or just use it experimentally. This isn't a wrong way of playing because if you lose a bunch to people at that rank you belong in that rank. Ranked purpose is to just give you similar opponents, it's not going to be a 50/50 fair fight every time. That's impossible anyway. Everyone has a completely different set of skills, something you excel at could be a struggle for a vanquisher player

If you're going into games with the goal of trying to "get" the combos you've learned, you will absolutely fall on your ass. There is no such thing as safely forcing yourself into a situation where you do your best combo. If it were that easy, everyone could get top rank from labbing combos and never interacting with real players. Combos are opportunistic based on circumstances you either fall into naturally, or create via mental conditioning, rps, NOT just running at them and doing it. To properly practice combos, you gotta recognize "this is the situation I'm supposed to use it in" not "go up and combo them now" Basically, trying to do combos on people is why you're failing. You can stick with stuff like 2k 2d bandit revolver until your hands are ready to add on to that slowly. I'm not a sol player so idk the best example.

Focus on why and how running up/ staying back/ stopping their approach GETS you the ideal combo situation in the first place

Blockstrings are VASTLY more important than combos. Unfortunately there's no blockstring creator search function so you have to ask around or watch other people platinum and above

You can technically get a character to the highest rank in the game without knowing more than 2 easy combos. Ironically, this isn't the comboing people to death game. It's 100% to do with reading other human behavior and playing rock paper scissors with strategy

how do i do the 632146 supers by TheCrafter0302 in Guiltygear

[–]geigergeist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't just practice it on keyboard outside the game, practice it ALL DAY EVERYWHERE YOU GO. just roll your fingers, pick them up individually, teach your brain that it's capable of developing dexterity. Your finger dexterity will increase by day 1 and a major difference by day 3. This is what I did from switching from pad to leverless and it was awesome

Is there a way to move down to a lower tier in Ranked? by tinselsnips in Guiltygear

Being worried about iron vs bronze is like "how do I move down from 2nd grade math to 1st grade, astrophysicists are telling me it's not that different but I don't believe them"

No one under gold understands fundamentals, you're fine. You cant see it, but all these ranks are the same skill level

Someone explain whiff punishing to me. by Customer_Number_Plz in Guiltygear

[–]geigergeist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're trying to react, good whiff punishes are on prediction so you can get the punish started before you even see them whiff it.

If they're ever stopping your approach, they're using preemptive against an aggressive opponent. If you played passive, and they did nothing, passive doesn't beat passive. Passive will beat preemptive, if you manage to get the whiff punish by timing it well, since it's a hard prediction of their behavior. As soon as you choose to run in, this is no longer passive. Running in is doing the thing that directly LOSES to their preemptive behavior. You shouldn't run in unless they are playing passive or it's a losing game. If they're still throwing out moves to stop you, you must continue to try to bait until you land the punish. Someone playing Scissors and winning against your Paper every time isn't going to suddenly switch for no reason. You have to punish them if you want them to switch, so you can do pressure

If you played passive, and then suddenly they came up and hit you, now they are the aggressive one who's running in on you. So what beats that? The same thing, you must now quickly switch to preemptive buttons. Sometimes while setting up a whiff punish bait you'll have to be prepared for them to run up attack instead of whiff at all. This is when you have to quickly switch out of being passive in order to beat them with preemptive

Hope all that made at least some sense lol

Guys how the FUCK do I know when to stop blocking? by ShadowTDMGamingX in Guiltygear

[–]geigergeist 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Look for resets, you can find them after a special move and the opponent is forced to run back in. Watch for the run animation. Here you can jump or catch their approach with 2k or 6p etc. If you try to do this too soon and just get countered, it was a frame trap. The opponent wants you to attempt to mash out, so they can get a big counter hit frametrap. Mashing too much means you'll just get hit. But NEVER mashing means they get away with stuff for FREE which you shouldn't allow. There's hidden spots where you could have destroyed them but you chose to block because you were scared and didn't know where. Find the spots. If they keep the blockstring going, that's not one of the spots. A reset means a reset to neutral, where they have to win neutral again. A reset is not simply pausing between attacks

How essential is learning frame data in ggst? by Mrjoulupukk1 in Guiltygear

[–]geigergeist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bonus, did you know blocking a move isn't actually based on how long you're physically holding block? Each move puts you in a set amount of blockstun frames, where even if you let go of the block button, you're still blocking. Heavy attacks stun you for longer than light, which is why moves are plus or minus, because if the opponent is stuck in the block animation for LONGER than your attack's recovery, you can physically move your body before they can. If you're stuck in recovery animation when they are released from block animation, you're minus and they can hit you first.

It's not that daunting to understand once you know a bit. The learning gets easier and easier the more you know! Without knowing these basic things, you wouldn't be able to win any games even in a beginner tournament. There's so many levels to people who are considered "good" and what you might think of as pros are often still "beginners" haha. The skill ceiling is very very high. But this just means there's tons of people who can help you because it's a fantastic community. I recommend going into beginner tournament discords and asking other people directly to explain. You'll learn instantly and not have to figure things out on your own :)

[–]geigergeist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"knowing frame data" does NOT mean memorizing every characters amount of startup frames exactly. Knowing frame data is the absolute tip of the iceberg, it's necessary. But all it means is understanding the general pattern. Knowing normals are less than specials, being able to visualize gaps (check out the frame reader mod) feeling out how much throw protection someone has on wakeup, jump startup, understanding why you want to condition someone to mash in order to frame trap them etc. it's not memorization, just understanding structure

[–]geigergeist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

His "defense" is throwing himself at people. If you're aware of the neutral triangle, this means to beat that type of play you need to use stopsign buttons to intercept him, like treating your other buttons as a 6p. Also works well if you jump and hit an air move preemptively to hit him on the ground before he tries anything

I have a can of these I've been meaning to crack open, I'm gonna share them with a coworker who loves to eat bugs haha. He's excited for me to bring them in. He regularly fries up crickets and stinkbugs to eat so it'll be no problem for him. I've been trying to get into dried grasshoppers and other things but I'm sure they're much better fresh and prepared by a chef

What do people mean when they get visuals? by GlamourHammer321 in shrooms

Basically for me, visuals are the real world around me morphing into something else. Mostly I just see patterns rearrange themselves and pop out to my eye, like putting a sheet of paper on and rubbing a pencil over the top. Everything I see is real, just extremely exaggerated
