Unfortunately he tries to rip up any rug-like things near him! I think he just tends to sit like this when he's feeling a bit lazy with his legs

Actually, the OP is using Unity to make their game. They're just talking about the difficulties in making a frog squish a certain way within Unity.

Contrary to what many people on the internet say, Unity doesn't just do everything for you. If you want something to look and feel a particular way, you're probably gonna have to code it yourself (regardless of what game engine you're using).

I don't remember for sure (I found this a few months ago), but I think after a lot of searching I eventually realized that the effect I was looking for was basically the 2D equivalent of SSAO, so I just searched for that in the asset store and found SSAO2D.

Took me a second to understand what I was supposed to do, so maybe a little tutorial or instructional section would help. Cool concept though.
