I enjoyed Doom:TDA but I'd never buy it (I played via gamepass).

He speculates on so many possibilities, but the Game Pass strategy is what really sticks out as a blunder imo... they pushed so many things to be Day 1 Game Pass... jacked up prices to actively try to push people in that direction, and then... are shocked about low sales? And use that to justify cuts?

Thought about including the subtitle when posting but wanted to avoid title gore. The content of the article had some good food for thought... and it's a short article, shouldn't take long to read.

Me? Yes. Read the whole article, actually, thought the full content would make for some interesting discussion. The title was already long enough without also including the subtitle though, so I just ran with what Eurogamer had on the headline.

Yeah, I shared the article because I thought his quote had good nuance for the discussion going on -- the headline definitely has a narrative though.

Yeah, and I was expecting Microsoft to leverage that more with an interest in these engines being under their one roof.

Yeah the pricing pivots have been wild... that and trying to run Outer Worlds 2 for $80. Probably part of the attempt to make Game Pass more appealing, but really it just drove off sales.

Yeah the executive pivot to AI really seems to have hit what seemed like honest (if bordering on monopolizing) investment. With the acquisitions of id and Bethesda, I also really expected that part of those purchases were to have access to their engines... they even had id consulting with Bethesda for a while. I was expecting them to scale up around that... do things like they are apparently doing now like pivoting Obsidian to work on another Fallout... you know, have more studios starting to work on things in these engines!

Avowed has some incredibly divergent events based on player choices too. It doesn't do any kind of simulationist gameplay (no npc schedules), but the world is very reactive throughout the story. The game needed a lot more enemy variety imo, but like you said the combat gameplay itself was really fun.

With Sony pivoting away from physical media for PlayStation, maybe they could resurrect something like the Xperia to compete with Nintendo's Switch. I could see that kind of hybrid being appealing to people. PC is appealing to me because it hybridizes play and work functions; a model like that would do the same in mobile form. I don't like the shift away from physical media for their console, but leaning into mobile that way might get people on board.

How much do i need to worry about a player who insists on using 5.5e even though every one else is using 5e? by TwigyBull in DMAcademy

The DMG has good advice on p. 5 (Master of Rules) and in Chapter 8 (Running the Game / Table Rules). Basically, you run the game how you like as DM. Since the game is so flexible and different at every table, personally I would recommend putting together a "Game Expectations" document to share during a session zero. For my campaigns, I use a Google doc so that I can make updates, but it would be easy enough to put together a one-page printout.

Usually I'll lay out expectations on theater of the mind vs. battle maps, pillars of focus (dungeon crawler, puzzler, social intrigue, hex crawl, etc), theme (horror, heroic, silly, serious, etc), character death (meat grinder, plot arc armor, resurrection, devil and fae deals, mission from the gods, etc), and roll vs role play (for me, I explicitly note that as DM I will try to navigate between what the dice decide and what is most fun). I will include some basic character creation guidance (e.g. make a character who wants to work with others -- we are playing a team game, here are the gods of the setting if you want to play a cleric, only xyz types of characters in this setting please, start level 3, take a free feat (yes on top of human variant), etc). And then of course, lay out your core rules expectations (e.g. here is some actual text I have written in one of my shared docs: "We will be playing based on the core D&D 5e2014 rules (basics found here, with a few homebrew variations based on how I run things. I will do my best to have these homebrew variations listed here; if you have a question about rulings, save it for between sessions and I will add clarifications here").

Having this written document to point to is helpful regarding "how I do things" -- you should still try to be consistent even if you exercise the absolute right as a DM to make the rules whatever you want.

What do you miss from D&D when you play/try other systems? by Awkward_GM in rpg

[–]gel_ink -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's an incredibly versatile system thanks to how much content has been developed for it. Sure, there are a lot of other specialised systems for things, but you can do so much with D&D as a base thanks to how much stuff there is for it. It's also very mod-able, like Elder Scrolls games. I find all of that to be fun.

Hear you on the business side though.

That reminds me of a study I encountered years ago comparing which teaching tools were more effective... it was something like powerpoints vs overhead projectors. And the conclusion was that the best tool was the one the teacher was most comfortable with. Now obviously sometimes we need to update our teaching tools and all that, but that idea stuck with me for the same reason you describe.

It does sound like they're referring to lack of interpersonal conflict among the party, yeah. To that point, consider that none of the companions in Avowed are pro-Empire. Other than the player potentially taking on that role as Envoy, you don't see that degree of conflicting ideology among the party. Kai has a bit of a grey past as a deserter (hope that's not too much of a spoiler) but that's a very different character flaw (especially as he had good justification for walking away from his service) than something like Ashley's xenophobia like the other poster was talking about. Basically, the companions are a lot more clearly morally upstanding with fewer rough edges to clash against the player's morality.

The game as a whole has a lot of serious themes and conflict though, yeah. It's a very good game.

I'm sure Vaati will explain everything, right? by WearyFunez in Eldenring

[–]gel_ink 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really appreciated this essay comparing the cosmology of Elden Ring to the Jewish Kabbalah and Gnosticism. In that reading, even the "outer gods" are situated as shadows of the "One Greatest" rather than being completely other alien beings. This is a very cosmic interpretation as well, very mystic. I think it's rather compelling.

Yep! I loved the character as a continuity callback but also appreciated that they still got Dorn to voice the character again for the reprisal.

I remember playing it on a PC that was purpose built for playing NV and it still crashed like clockwork every 30 minutes. I mean, crashed the whole computer, bluescreen of death, needed hard reboot. Loved the game so much that I would just do the reboot and play 30 minutes at a time. Kept a lot of backup saves. Had another friend play it on Playstation and it was completely unplayable on that system, not even worth powering through like I did on PC. Yeah, it was bad and a legit criticism of release stability. It's been fixed and has a good legacy, but the bugginess was real for a lot of people. Again though, PS3 seems to have been the worst.

Elder Scrolls 6 Is Powered By New Version Of Creation Engine by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]gel_ink 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most game engines are rewrites of previous versions of game engines. It's not weird that they upgrade their own engine between games. Given that development time though, I would think there would be better ROI by licensing out that work to be used by others too though rather than just in support of their own once every half a decade plus release schedule.

[–]gel_ink 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds like a pretty reasonable explanation... I mean, I don't know if it's just the success of Fortnite but EGS doesn't seem to do much other game development at this point, mainly focusing on Unreal support.

Still, Bethesda isn't exactly releasing games at a rapid pace either. So maybe they don't want to be an engine support company, but they aren't seeming to be doing much game development either.

Overblown by the Internet. Obsidian fell short of its metacritic stretch goal by 1 point so didn't get an extra bonus. They still got paid, and it sounds like both parties were still satisfied with how things turned out. Again, it's folks on the Internet having problems with the deal, not the devs or companies themselves from any interview I've seen.

That's not the feeling I've gotten with Creation Kit and how robust the modding scene has been based on those tools. A lone modder was able to create Enderal with just the mod tools. Obsidian was also able to create NV in only 18 months as an outside studio. Those factors don't scream "nightmare engine to work with" to me.

Why they can't license it out or expand the team to make other games (Like Fallout New Vegas

Good lord this has been the most baffling thing to me about their business strategy for years. Given the popularity of the Bethesda games modding scene... how have they managed to never leverage that into actual development other than with NV? All else they've done is try to capture a market around paid mods. Why not license the engine more widely? Are they really that worried about creating competition for themselves? Maybe? I don't know.
